My mother was born to my grandmother 3 years after the death of her husband. Birth certificate
did not say illegitimate. In the space for mother, father, date of marriage etc it gives dead husband
details including date of his death and states mother is a widow. Is this normal or was it an over
zealous registrar..

What year and what country as you have posted on the Common Room board so no clues there
English birth certs do not show the type of detail you have given

Birth took place in January 1918 in Ayrshire, Scotland. Have never seen another entry like this for
any illegitimate birth.

I found 2 births like this while researching my family tree. 1883 in Midlothian and 1917 in Fife. Both mothers are listed as, "Widow of *** *** who died ** ** ****". Both these births are listed as illegitimate. Both births are indexed twice on ScotlandsPeople, under mother's married name and maiden name.
Regards, Dod.

My great great grandfather was born 16mon after his mum's husband had died. He was listed as illegitimate and registered under his Mum's maiden name. He wasn't born in Ayrshire though.

Birth certificate showed both grandmother 's maiden name and married name. Also 2 entries
In Scotlands People but that due to birth not being at domicile address.
