My 5x GGrandfather married a Gwen in Bala abt 1794
They had a son David abt 1795 in Bala
Can anyone help with Gwen's surname and if they had any more children?
-
Nothing showing for a marriage in Llanycil (parish for Bala) 1794+/-
Do you know what David, snr's father's name was? There was a period around then when they used the patronymics in the registers.

No...cannot get beyond David Jones. The family were shoemakers (crudd)
-
Nearest that I have found for the young David Jones with parents David and Gwen and bpt circa 1795 is
Llandderfel 6 March 1796. Residence given as Tre Nantffrayer( ?)
Would that fit the family? Llandderfel is not all that far from Bala.
They could have been non-conf.

This is very promising! What is the source?
Are there any further family members? I don't suppose there is any evidence of a marriage is there?
Many, many thanks,
Merle

From the parish records.
Other baptisms to a David and Gwen of Nantf(f)rayer, Llandderfel
28 March 1789 Magdalen
15 Feb 1791 John
No marriages though.
I saw a possible Gwen, aged 80 on the 18511841 but not sure. What was David jnr's occupation?

A burial in Llandderfel for David Jones:
January 22 1829, David Jones of Cwm, Nantffrayer aged 72
This fits with the 1841 for Gwen: HO107/1430/7/6/11
-
Brilliant! Thank you soooooo much.
David junior was a shoemaker as were the next 3 generations.

Is he the David Jones in Montgomeryshire in 1851:
HO107/2499/718/7
Ty'n y ffordd, Dwyffrwd
David Jones, 54, shoemaker, b. Merioneth, Bala
Eleanor,56, b. Montgomery, Llanwddyn
Evan, 25, Ag Lab, b. Pennant
Mary, 22, Spinner, b. Pennant
I just needed the HO107/2499/718/7 :D

I'm not sure about the Llandderfel family. The problem is that there's no info so far that suggests yea or nay .... Was Elinor a Davies?
Will have another look around at the records.
-
OK
How about this baptism
25th March 1798, Llanycil (image could be 1799)
David son of David Jones, Didiard* and Gwen his wife
This date of baptism fits more with the census info than your original date.

*Added - there is another couple (David and Gwen) but they are of Ty hen, Llanycil
Also, could be Llidiard
-
It is Llidiardau - the D's are different.
Here it is on modern map:

To the NW of Bala.

There is a Gwen Jones baptised Llanycil 29 Sept 1793 to David and Gwen but no abode given so it could be the Ty Hen couple :-\
-
Yes, this is the same David Jones

Great research Gadget!
Not sure which to go with...
There is a discrepancy on David jr's birth on c1841 & c1851 so your findings on his birth is feasible.
Yes Elinor, his wife was a Davies. She was from Llanwddyn.
Found a Magdelen on the 1841c but a discrepancy of 10 years in her age and birth date.
Hey ho!
-
David Jones jr is identified as being 64 on his headstone when he was buried in 1860 (and later re buried in the new Llanwddyn cemetery)
-
I noticed that Elinor was older than him and would be circa 64 in 1860. Also, the headstone would have probably been erected/made a while after his death - his age would be whoever ordered the stone. Did it give his age on his death cert/burial record?
Gadget
-
Elinor died 1853 aged 59. I.e. b 1794. This corresponds to her headstone and parish records.
David's age on his headstone also corresponds to parish burial records I.e. born 1796
-
I see that a William Jones was one of the witnesses at David and Elinor's marriage). He made his mark. Maybe a possible relative but these Joneses in Wales !! (I've got eight different lines of them, mostly Merionethshire too).
How did you find that his parents were David and Gwen?
-
One of David and Eleanor's children was named William (a twin!) so I guess he wad a relative. My 2 family surnames are Jones and Hughes.......quite a challenge!!!!
I cannot for the life remember how I identified David and Gwen as David's parents. I usually make a note of my sources, but alas, not on this one! I guess without proof, the parents are suspect. I wonder if his father was also a shoemaker??
Are you able to access my Ancestry tree?
-
If you PM me your tree link, I'll have a look :)
By the way, how is Glyn today? - all those lovely trees in autumn colours down from Chirk to Glyn - many bike rides in my youth :D
-
Just found your tree and will look at it later this evening :)
