Title: Can anyone answer a quick military question.
Post by: jess5athome on Friday 26 October 18 20:46 BST (UK)
Hi, I am at present looking into the life of a lad on my local war memorial who died 100 years ago today, I have birth, parents, wife etc and his census results.

His name was Herbert Sutton, 266621 Driver, Royal Horse Artillery, born 1886 in Thorne Yorkshire, his service records don't look to have survived and I cannot find a Medal Index Card on Ancestry, I have Burial, register of effects etc, however he is shown on the "UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919" as Formerly "38460, Pte., 3Rd Res. Cav", could anyone shed any light on what regiment etc this was.

Many thanks in advance and my very best regards always.

Frank.

LLT says this about K Bty. 1V Bde.
In Christchurch in August 1914. Moved to Windmill Hill Camp to join new XV Brigade RHA, which was formed to join the new 3rd Cavalry Division on 1 October 1914. Battery then placed under orders of 7th Cavalry Brigade. Landed at Ostend on 8 October 1914. XV Brigade RHA was renamed as IV Brigade in May 1915.

The pages from 15-28 Oct. 1918 are missing from the diary. The last known location was Manincourt where 4/Bde. were supporting the 1st. Cavalry Div.
The Bde. suffered 4 OR's killed & 37 wounded during that operation.
I'll take a look at the 1st. Div. diary.

Ancestry have made a c*ck up of the 1st. Div. diary so the closest location I can find so far for K Bty. close to his death is Neuvilly France. This was on 9/10/18.

Although he died 26/10/18 it doesn't state if of wounds or KIA. I suspect he died from wounds sustained during the operations at Cambrai or the following battle at the Selle.
