Hello fellow RootsChatters,
Just to let you know that the new RootsChatterBox is up and running.
Once you have logged in to RootsChat, just click on the "chat" button on the menu.
We've created a few "Rooms" in there to start us off - including one for "Instant Lookups".
How we use the new RootsChatterBox is up to you.
You may find it better if we decide to log into it "on the hour", that way you are more likely to bump into another fellow RootsChatter.
For the "Instant Lookup" room, it may be a good idea to have some kind of timetable or announcement as to what day or time the lookups are going to be done for particular resouces - so keep an eye on the Calendar for "RootsChatterBox Lookup Events". :) :)

There was half a dozen of us on it last night in the "Common Room" part of the RootsChatterBox - it was great !!

I thought i'd just pop in to see if anyone was about and got booted out. It said i was already in there...i reentered my password and got booted out again.
any ideas lol

When you enter the RootsChatterBox, leave by using the "back" button. If you forget to do it, then just leave it a whole minute, then it will be ok again.

I really enjoyed the short time I spent in the Chat Room this morning - very early here in Oz!
Hope I didn't cause too much trouble by not exiting correctly - it was my first experience of chatting online - well, that's my excuse anyway! ::)
It was great - just like meeting old friends ;D - Thanks RootsChat - it just keeps getting better.

I completey logged out of here for about 15 mins....logged back in and went into chat and got booted out again!

??? Try this:
Close down (not just minimise) all the windows of your browser
Have a cup of tea while leaving it a minute,
then logging back into RootsChat before going

PS I think if you use a PopUp blocker tehn that can casue it problems not logging you out - as a little popup does the loggin out bit. Try disabling the popup blocker just to see if it makes any difference next time you get into it ok.

Help, Its not just you it hates Fitty it don't like me much either.
I can get in and sort of get out, although when I go back to Rootschat its stuck and I have to shut internet down, but my problem is that I cant see the chat lines, I've seen some but when the box fills up it doesnt move up so I can see new ones, and some I've sent I cant see at all, dont know if others can see them or if they just didnt work.
I've turned off pop up stopper but that made things worse I think, dont really know, though cos couldnt see anything

The RootsChatterBox uses Macromedia Flash towork.
You can download the latest (and free) version of Flash at:
http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/
It might be because possibly your flash installation is out of date or some way not installed properly (but I'm not sure really).

We can certainly add more rooms as we need to - any ones in particular?
If we add too many rooms too quickly we will end up with one person in each room and nobody talking to anybody though... ::)

Hi,
Yes I understand and will make a suggestion should it seem that there are several chatters with the same interest in the future.
I seemed as if Essex could be one to consider in view of last nights chat,although my actual interest in Essex is limited.
As you suggest I think it will evolve over time .
I am very supportive of the whole Rootschat concept .Great resource..

Have fiddled with my macro flash thingy, and been back in chat room, and it seems to work, but I was all on my own so couldnt really test it, will try again later, but things seem to have improved

Grandad james If you get any problems it could well be a pop up blocker so that has to be set to allow popups from this site.

I dont know if its just me,but i cant seem to get into the chat room.I am getting a little window saying flash mutie media 7 is running too slowley and will freeze your computer,do you wish to continue,i clicked yes and i just got something flashing on and off.Am i doing something wrong.Anne. ???

I,m not very techy but it sounds to me like your processor is'nt fast enough to cope with the flash7.

It,s the same thing really.....lol The faster the processor the speedier the puter sorts out all the data........or something like that!

hehehehe Don't worry too much if your processor is too slow for the new RootsChatterBox - we may well end up changing it within a few weeks to something a bit more relaxed- we're still tinkering with it - but it does work very well for people with newer computers.

Thankyou Fitty,i think i have got it.I have a computer thats like me past its sell by date,i am getting a brand spanking new one in a couple of weeks,trouble is i hope i dont get something i dont really need,i mean nothing too technical just the basics will do me,i will have to trust the salesman.Anyway Fitty thankyou again.Anne. ;)

Ooh err, I don't like the sound of the chatterbox only being available to newer 'puters. I'm at big bruvver's so it works great; At home the thing's at least six years old- I'm not holding out much hope as it struggles even to load the big census files.

I'ts not a requirement to have a super-dooper-new-computer to use the RootsChatterBox, but the chances are a newer computer will have the latest browser loaded on it. The trick really (even with an old computer) is to use "Windows Update" to keep everything up to date, or visit the Microsoft site www.microsoft.com and check for any updates for one's computer.
The computer that I do most of my day-to-day work on is about four years old, (bought at a computer fair for £80. I bought it as a test machine, but because it is very small it's really handy for me.) I don't run Microsoft Windows, (I run SUSE Linux www.SUsE.de/en ) and the ChatterBox works great on this old machine.
Sarah on the other hand has a brand-new really fast computer, that uses Windows XP. The ChatterBox works fine with that too.

It is great fun we had one RootsChatter from the other side of the world who got up early especially to chat to us uk Chatters.

Just to say I ran Windows Update and things have improved a bit, I did manage to have a bit of a chat tonight.
My problem is that sometimes I send my message but it doesnt appear and neither does anyone elses, like its just got stuck. By the time I log all the way out of the internet and back in I've lost the thread of the conversation.
