Is it just me?
On the rootschat "home" page I don't have a header, just a list of the usual headings eg Home, Forum, Help etc down the left and side of the page in blue font. There are over 35 current genealogy topics when I am sure there used to be a lot fewer.
I found the same on my ipad earlier and thought it might be my old ipad, but it is the same on my desktop.
Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
-
It seems the sames as yesterday to me, Ruskie
-
Thanks Gadget. It must just be me.
Could be my settings - I have just noticed some of the emojis have words rather than the emoji eg at the moment I have the words 'cheesy', 'huh' and 'undecided' and the rest are the usual emojis.
I have probably fiddled with something I shouldn't have. :)
-
I agree with Gadget, nothing out of place for me.

Ruskie, It was the same for me tonight, only blue text down the left side of the screen, I reloaded the page a few times until it loaded normaly.
-
Thanks JM.
Starcat, I was resigned to the fact that this was probably just me - glad it is not just me. ;)
I will try reloading but I wonder if one of the techy people can offer any suggestions about why it happens or how to fix this. :)
-
All normal, often pages don't load properly if internet speed/wifi is slow!

It is the header that I have in list form thanks Hallmark. Internet speed is good.
The topics on my page look like yours, but I note you also have a lot more topics than usual too. I estimate that there used to be about 20 or so - now there are nearly 40.
I don't know if this is a new 'feature' or related to my header issue.
Rather than having the graphic at the top of the page, it looks like a bit like this :
RootsChat.com
home
forum
Help
Search
Profile
Summary
Account Settings
Forum Profile
My Messages
Read your messages

I have tried refreshing the page but the proper header has not returned. I have also opened rootschat on another page but that is no different.
I will try turning it off and then turning it on. :)

I kept getting messages telling me the Rootschat wasn't safe, etc. and none of the emojis or the icons for Bold, Italics etc. were there. However, since yesterday it has all been normal.

Are you using Firefox?
-
Yes, using Firefox was it something to do with them?
-
I noticed that some people were receiving messages saying rootschat wasn't safe. :-\
No graphic header for me on both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
-
No graphic header
So that's what it's called ::) :-[
-
I have my header back now :)
(some of the emoji icons are still words though).

It must be the Halloween spooks ::) ::)

I think there are various names for it - usually just "header" (I think).

False alarm - I don't have my header back. I still have the list and no graphic .... and the corrupted emojis. :'(

For some reason Firefox wasn't working 100% for me a couple of days ago!
I went to my Downloads and hit Firefox Installer let t install and all was 100% again!
It was latest version already installed!!
it was working....then I got messages about encryption and stuff. All gone after reinstalling!

Checking the menu at the top of the page (below the header) -:
HOME FORUM HELP SEARCH PROFILE MY MESSAGES CALENDAR CHAT
I see the correct header and the graphic on all pages except the HOME page and the HELP page (where I see no graphic and the headings are listed down the left side of the page).
(just in case anyone can help fix this) :)

It no longer works properly with older versions of Internet Explorer, which I daren't update as I'm still using Windows XP. It does work for me with Firefox.
There's an old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". It seems that these days everybody has an urge to tinker with things that work, just for the hell of it.

I don't have the problem viewing from here, but clearly some of you are having a problem so I can look into it. We've moved RootsChat over to use the more secure "https" way of delivering pages to your browser.
I need some help from those of you who are having problems to give me a bit more information to help me try and see what the problem may be:
Am I right in thinking that this problem only occurs on the "Home" page and the "Help" pages?
Are the rest of the forum pages (these topics and posts) are looking correctly?
What operating system are you using (eg, Windows) and what version is it (eg Windows XP, Widows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10) or are you viewing it on a tablet (what sort of tablet is it) or a mobile.
Do you know what sort of browser you are using (eg Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc) and do you know what version it is (you might find it under 'About' in the menu of the browser).
When you see this problem are you normally logged in (in other words, do you see your username at the top or the word "Guest")?
What is the actual address that you see in the address bar? Does it start with "http://" or "https://" (with the extra "s")?
Don't worry if you don't know all of this, but if you can give me as much as you can please, then that would be really very helpful.
Many thanks,
Trystan

Not been having any problems, but just for the record:
Using Safari V 12.0 (12306.2.11) on Mac OS Sierra v 10.12.6
I get the https: version and all is well
Oh, and yes I am logged into RC

Trystan
When did you change to https?
-
On Thursday, early afternoon.

Ahhhh....see reply #17 ;D ;D

Hi Trystan
Had the Rootschat home page display incorrectly yesterday 28 Oct at about 5pm - everything else fine. Turned on today at 8am and everything fine.
I use Windows 10 on a PC, Firefox 63.0 (64-bit), logged into Rootschat.com and my thanks to you and Sarah for a great website. It is one of the first sites I go to each morning.
-
Ahhhh....see reply #17 ;D ;D
So it's all right for you now?
-
Beth42 & TickettyBoo
Thanks both for your feedback.
We've been trying a couple of different things as the board names didn't work right at first, so there have been a few hiccups. :)

All OK! It was probably just timing ;D

Tristan, I guess this was not what you had planned for Sunday evening :), but unless it’s my imagination, on an up to date iPad I have not seen any problems but if I change pages within rootschat, not by using the back button, the banner does not seem to reload.
My speed is low and I usually see the page load in segments
Mike
-
Mike,
Are you saying there are no problems on your Ipad, but there are problems on some other device you are on?
When you say you normally see page loads in segments, was that also the case before Thursday?
Trystan
-
I only use the iPad, but roots seems for me to be faster the last couple of days.
Wish I could be more helpful, but it has always loaded in segments, I just thought, after years of looking at an oscilloscope trying to spot subtle changes in amplitude on the fly that something had changed in the way roots loaded.
I am only talking fractions of a second here

Mike
I stare at an oscilloscope too and look for subtle changes in a waveform too, but that's my hobby side of things. :) Nowt to do with RootsChat. I'm quite happy as a pig in muck with a pile of components, a soldering iron and my scope.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the problem but more years ago than I care to remember the advanced physics class were building radios from scratch, our droll Scots physics master said
“I see yours is quite the noisiest, most appropriate” ;D ;D

Home and help are the only two that display the “personal messages” message above the banner

Hi Trystan.
So sorry it was my "night time" when you asked for specific information about the issues I was having.
I am pleased to let you know that whatever you did, the header seems to be back to normal now.
I still have the words, not pictures, for three of the emojis though.
Would you still like me to try to answer the questions you asked at your reply #21 ?
-
Trystan - It was Thursday I started getting messages saying that Rootschat wasn't safe and I was sending info over an insecure something or other ::) At the same time I lost the emojis and the graphics. The header was still there and the poppy photo and Home, Forum etc. I just ignored the unsafe message as I thought it was irrelevant.
I wasn't on the Home page, I was on various topic pages. By Friday, everything was back to normal.
-
Trystan, quick question if I may?
On the FORUM page, is it my imagination, or are there many more Current Forum Topics now than there used to be? :)

Hi Ruskie,
Yes but this change was made a long time ago, can not remember exactly when.

Ha ha, that's fine thanks Sarah (I was just curious). :)

I also had a temporary blip on the homepage about the time Ruskie was describing. When I'm quickly catching up with emails etc and have a moment, I check the RC home page without logging in. It was a sea of blue writing that once, rather like the 4 lines underlined that we have now after the first post and bottom post of each page, as I remember it. I didn't think to take a screen shot at the time as was a bit preoccupied and it was back to normal when I next looked. I did start to log in again prior to today but was called away, though noticed thankfully that annoying message about site security I'd had for ages each log in has finally gone ... yay!
Thanks for the right twiddling Trystan :D mare

I know I'm a few days late but didn't see this thread before.
I too was getting problems last week with not being able to get onto the site - messages about security etc. To be fair, my Mac is getting pretty old now, and I thought it was something that had happened to the site so that I could no longer access it. (I have other sites, normally those with lots of whizzy graphics, which won't load. They are no great loss as they're usually shopping sites!).
I know I shall have to bite the wallet soon, and get a new computer, and I thought my time was up.
But thank you Trystan and Sarah, I now don't need to do that just yet,
Thankfully a couple of days later (sorry, not sure which day), all was well again and Rootschat now loads fine - and it is the https version. I use Safari (probably not the most up to date version Trsytan as this machine won't take an upgrade).
Once again thank you Trystan and Sarah. :)
