Title: Editing stale/broken links?
Post by: hauxworth on Sunday 28 October 18 17:39 GMT (UK)
Why is it impossible to maintain & update relevant detail on this site? Yes, I'm referring to links in Posts.

Not only is it impossible to 'Edit' my Posts due to a 'lack-of-vision-decision' by Management (and also the 24hr lapse) but also no links to ask moderators for help. (at least not where RC Help says they are located) "Red Button"???? Huh?!

How do I edit my out-of-date links please?

Not only will this improve the quality of this Site but also the accuracy of my Post(s). Shocking I know but this RC Site and it's participants and members will ALL be better off.

After just now having spent a half-hour updating a year old Post on other, more modern forums, RC is just so impossibly painful.

So, do I have to start a new 'duplicate' topic? Is that a/the solution?

- Thank you

See that little 'report to moderator' link at the bottom of your post?  That's how you can contact a moderator.

As for updating a link, just add a reply to the thread with the updated link.  Hey, presto, problem solved.

hauxworth the links are frequently updated in postings, you may come across a post which may have been posted many years ago but may have an updated aug 2018 next to it.

Anyone can get intouch and do if they come across something that they wish to update, normally by clicking on the report to moderator button as suggested to you.

As Erato said,

Just press the "Report to Moderator" button for whichever post it relates to.

Put in the report, that there's a broken link and what the link should be.

Simple.

It's the "Report to Moderator". That's how you get help from a moderator.

Also to ask for help there's a whopping big "Contact Support" button on the Home Page, and at the bottom of the Help pages. Every email that you receive from us can also be replied to, and we also give our address on the bottom of every page that you view. Oh, and you can also post a topic as you have discovered you can, on the "How to Use RootsChat" board.

I see that all the links that you relate to happen to be links all to to your old website, (hauxworth.info), but was allowed to expire

As for your view the 24h lapse is due to

'lack-of-vision-decision' by Management

I find that very personally insulting.

This is a free resource, given to you. All the moderators are volunteers. Everybody who helps you is doing it without being paid by you.

The features we have on here, and any restrictions that are placed are to protect the RootsChatters who spend many hours helping somebody with a query only to discover that the original poster had then subsequently edited their post to make out they already knew the fact. Sometimes somebody would edit a topic to make nonsense of all subsequent posts.

So 13 posts in you form an opinion that a restriction is "due to a 'lack-of-vision-decision' by Management".

I think people who post hundreds or thousands of posts on here out of the goodness of their hearts will have a different, and more mature view on this.

I think you may be right there - and also much more polite than hauxworth deserves.

How is your vision anyway?

Was it due to a 'lack-of-vision-decision' by the owner of that domain name do you reckon?
