Hi all,
looking for Marian Moss during the census of 1841.
I think living with father Thomas (?)and siblings (?) in Essex.
Don't know the name of the mother
Marian born 1820's
In 1843 she married William Gidney
where were they in 1851 and 1861 ?
Reason why I ask about Marian, is that I'm to establish if she was a sister of Susannah Moss or maybe a cousin. Susannah also got married in 1843 (also Sep. 1843, Chelmsford, Vol. 12, Page 85). Witnesses at Susannah's wedding (to William Wilson) were Mary Ann Gidney and William Gidney. So there must be a connection between Marian and Susannah.....
any help grately appreciated. thank you

looks like Sarah is Mary Ann's mother. Susannah was already living with William Wilson in 1841 with her 2 children. They didn't get married until 1843.
Can you find out when Thomas and Sarah got married ?
The Hawkins children ? are they related to William and Mary Ann ?

Do you have Marian's marriage cert to confirm her father's name is Thomas? If not what evidence do you have that her father's name is Thomas?

no, I don't.
But in the Writtle Register of Marriage 1837-1919 it says that Susannah's father is Thomas.
I thought Susannah and Marian (Mary Ann) were sisters (because of the connection with William Gidney). But this doesn't have to be true ofcourse. They could be cousins ofcourse meaning that mary Ann's father is someone else then Thomas.....

Can anyone look into the Writtle Register of Marriages 1837-1919 (or maybe some other source I'm not aware about) if Mary Ann (Marian) Moss and William Gidney got married in the Writtle area 1843. And does it say who were the witnesses and name of her father ?
thank you

Boyds marriage index has a marriage in Writtle in 1810 of a Thomas Moss to a Sara Brazier.
I note that you can browse the Bishop's Transcripts for Writtle ( use the catalogue on Family Search to locate them) - baptisms and burials 1813 - 1838 and marriages 1813 - 1836.

:) An old chesnut re the 1841 census, it was the only census where the ages were "Rounded up/down" but not always, so in this case note in this family how the ages ( of the adults ) are all divisible by 5!

PS the Ellen Moss with Thomas/Sarah is Illegitimate and the Emma Moss with William Wilson & Susannah in 1841 possibly also?

wow CP, thank you. that's a lot more details about the Moss family from Writtle.
Wondering if William, John, Thomas, Elizabeth and Sophia were all siblings (and maybe Susannah). Although the age difference would have been quite substantial.
No, thinking about it. I don't think that William was a sibling to the others. the age difference is too large. He also was from Fobbing, not Writtle. maybe an uncle or cousin.
How old did someone have to be to be allowed to make a mark on or sign the marriage certificate (?) ?.
Because MAry Ann and Susannah would have been quite young when they made their mark I think...
