My friend has a Nokia phone which isn't connected to the web. She can however send messages to my iPhone and receive them from me.
She was recently on a mini break and we both sent each other a message but neither was received.
Sorry if this is a silly question but does that mean she has to be within a certain distance of her router before she can use Whatsapp, even though her phone is not connected to it?

As I understand it, you can only receive WhatsApp messages if you are connected to WiFi, either through your router or via data on your phone. WhatsApp uses your phone’s internet connection. So I guess your friend’s phone is set to WiFi and so picks up the signal when she’s at home. Perhaps what she means is that she doesn’t have a data package? Ask her to check settings to see if she is connected.

I think she must be connected at home even though she doesn’t realise it, otherwise she couldn’t use WhatsApp.

I think so.....but must be careful of hidden charges!

She’s adamant she isn’t connected to the web on her phone.
She has been home for a week now but neither message has come through. I know my message was sent.
It’s a puzzle.

She must be connected otherwise she couldn't use WhatsApp. Did she set up her own phone or did someone else do it for her?

Obviously she won't get her web based messages until she is on the Web!

Is it possible that she was using Wifi from an unsecured source from a near neighbour which has now become secure.
You need Wifi to use Whatsapp so she was getting it from somewhere.

Gadget, one grey tick at the end of my message. I don’t know about hers.
Groom, I don’t know who set it up for her but suspect grandson.
What is puzzling me is she uses her iPad a lot so if the phone is automatically connecting to the web, why have our messages not been sent/received?
I will get her to check her Settings as I think she needs to know if she is connected.

I think that's your answer! My sister's grandson set up her phone and connected her to all sorts of things he uses but she doesn't need. ;D ;D

I liked sending her WhatsApp messages as I could see if she’d read them if it was something important; don’t have that on email or text.

I emailed my friend, suggesting she check the Settings on her phone. She has replied, via WhatsApp, saying that things are now sorted at her end. She didn't comment on what was wrong or who has sorted it out for her.
She has also received my messages.

Probably what happened is... she went away, tried to connect to the internet while away (settings, selecting a different network and password) and somehow clicked on forget/delete network on her home network, hence her phone didn’t automatically connect her when she got home.
First thing to try if you cannot connect to your network. > settings > WiFi > check network. Or find network, select the one you are looking for and enter the password. You will know you are connected if the WiFi icon is on the top of your screen.
If you don’t do this often or someone else has set it up for you it’s easy to forget or not know how to check the settings

I've now seen my friend and she tells me while they were on their mini break a family member transferred data from their phone to hers.
The unused data was taken back at the end of their break. For some reason her phone didn't reconnect to the web once she was home, which she hadn't noticed until I emailed her asking why she hadn't read my WhatsApp messages.
All sorted now.

So in spite of the fact she was adamant she wasn't connected to the internet at home to use WhatsApp, she must have been. ;D

I now know not to bother with WhatsApp if she isn’t at home. Lessons learned on both sides.
