Title: Mary Gearing/Millard/Clark
Post by: clarksparks on Thursday 01 November 18 11:39 GMT (UK)
My great great grandfather, Robert Clark (widower) married Mary Millard (widowed) on 19 May 1884 at Two Mile Hill, St Michael, Bristol, Glos. following the death of his first wife Eliza (Greenaway).

Details show fathers: William Clark and John Gearing.

Robert Clark/e & Mary are listed in the 1891 census living at 6 Summerhill Road, St. George, Bristol. (Mary A Clark/e, wife, 70, b. 1821 Glos. Bitton, Hawker).

I believe that Mary was previously married to Joseph Millard and if so they are recorded in the census records of 1861/71/81 in St. George, Bristol, Glos. Joseph died in 1882.

But I'm unable to find any early records of Mary or her father John Gearing and family, or a marriage record of a Mary Gearing to Joseph Millard. (Her first son William was born about 1849 in Bristol.)

Can someone help please?

Her first son William was born about 1849 in Bristol.

Can you give the evidence of this, as I can’t see it on GRO?

So they’re the family recorded as “Miller” in Bristol in 1861?

Joseph 40 b Somerset
Mary 42 b Bitton, Glos
William 12 b St Philip’s, Bristol
Mary A 9 b St George’s, Gloucestershire
Elizabeth 5 b St George’s, Gloucestershire

RG9/1732/40/13.

RG 9/1732/ 40 p 13

1861 census: I believe incorrectly listed as 'Miller' - Joseph, Mary & 3 children (Whites Hill, St. George, Bristol).

No wonder I couldn’t find them.  ::)

Can’t see them as Millard on the other censuses either.

William 12 b St Philip’s, Bristol
Mary A 9 b St George’s, Gloucestershire
Elizabeth 5 b St George’s, Gloucestershire

Do you have GRO references to support these as Millard/Gearing, as I can’t.

Possible for Parents?

1871 Census
John Gearing, 76, Head, Mar Hatter, born London
Mary Gearing, 74, Wife, born Bitton, Gloucestershire
Alice Gearing, 47, Daug, born Bitton

1861 Census
John Garing   64
Mary Garing   63
Alice Garing   37

Alice Gearing appears to be a servant in 1851 born 1826 Longwell Green, Gloucestershire

In 1851 the household in Bitton of John Vincent Johnson GARRING (57, hatter b London) & wife Mary includes daughter Mary (30 b Bitton) and grandson William Garring, 1 b Bristol. (Also a granddaughter Harriot Garring, 12 b Bitton).

They are also GARRING in Bitton in 1841 - Mary’s father down as Vincent this time, again a hatter.

The 1851 record looks good. Longwell Green is v close to Bitton. Occupation 'Hatter' matches other records.

This may be previous generations in London of the Gearings;

VINCENT Gearing christened 24 June 1770, St John Zachary, London
Parents VINCENT JOHNSON Gearing and ELIZTH

Marriage;
13 August 1769   Saint James, Westminster, London, England

Cants find a Bapt for John Vincent Johnson Gearing in London or his Marriage to Mary

Thank you all for this information. I can't find a marriage record for Mary Garring or Gearing to Joseph Millard. Possibly she took his name and was never married to him.
