Hello Darren,
Where do you think she was born?
Where did she marry George?
Heywood
-
You do not give any indication of whereabouts she may have been born. Do you have her marriage certificate with her father’s name, and have you found her on any census with her parents?
You need that sort of information to progress backwards.
-
Sorry Born and died in Bream Gloucestershire. Her Dad was George don't have marriage certificate
-
1891 gives her place of birth as Blakeney, Gloucestershire.
Where did you find her fathers name
-

Perhaps she fibbed a bit.
-
Phenoslink takes me to the 1871 census, so born 1865

Ooh sorry - funny five mins. It could be her then born 1865 rather than 1868.
Couldn't find a marriage to George Miles in 1887 anywhere though.
Pheno
PS Will edit my previous post for correct date

I did not look at the link Mike, good job you did ;D

Rosie, think I'd better leave this topic alone - again I messed up the date and put 1867. Off for a nap now and hope to awake rejuvenated.

Just Checked 1911 census both her and George husband listed as being 40

I'm in a right pickle, not only with dates, cos I responded to Rosie when it was Heywood I should have addressed.

Just Checked 1911 census both her and George husband listed as being 40
That’s worrying because there is this one
https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AMary~%20%2Bsurname%3AChilds~%20%2Bbirth_place%3AGloucestershire~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1868-1872~
I should have shrunk that one
Mike
Edit
The Blakeny hill one
-
That looks interesting Mike ;D
1901 gives her age as 33 (bn Bream as are the rest of the family)
1891 - age 23 bn Blakeney
-
definitely born in bream
-
Does she definitely marry Mr Miles? Someone's tree on Ancestry connects her to a Henry John Batt (although it looks a bit sketchy). There's a Mary Batt in Caerleon in 1901 and Mary Childs there with Henry John in 1911 - b Bream c1865. Their children have mmn Childs and there's a Childs stepson Edwin b Bristol c 1890 (he's a Batt in 1901)
-
yes george miles
-
Sorry, I have been out and now back so hope I am not repeating anything.
How do you know her father is George if you don’t have the marriage details?
Are we accepting that Mary is the one found already but age is wrong.
-
Monmouth. 1864 December quarter vol 11a pg 22
Mary Ann Childes mmn Kear
This matches with George and Sophia Childs in 1871
Marriage
September 1863 Westbury S 6a 693
George Childes and Sophia Kear
-
As I asked earlier how do you know her father was George
What proof do you have
-
Have studied (and checked census) for the Ancestry tree referred to i.e. Mary A. Childs supposedly married to a Henry John Batt ca. 1894 (can't find) and census also confirms she was born around 1864/65 in Bream whilst 'your' Mary Childs' birth year varies between 1868 and 1871! In 1901 and 1911 said to be born Bream (where husband George Miles was born) BUT - as already mentioned - in 1891 her birthplace is given as Blakeney, Gloucestershire. Blakeney was the largest village in the parish of Awre:
1871 - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Thomas Allington, wife Elizabeth and dau. Agnes E. have with them a 'Mary Childs, 11 mos. born Blakeney Hill, Gloucestershire who is shown as 'adopted' (I think in this context it should probably read 'foster child' - by 1881 the Allingtons are in Durham and no Mary with them.
However, in 1881 West Dean, Gloucestershire we have:
George Childs 43 born Stroud, Glos.
Rebecca Childs 33 born Awre, Glos.
Mary Childs 12 dau. born Awre
plus a number of other children.
As George 'Child' he married Rebecca Grindle Sept.1871 Westbury on Severn
In 1871 George Childs is a widower living alone.
George Childs married his first wife Emma Buck in Sept.1867 Westbury on Severn - a dau. Mary Childs born Jun.1870 Westbury on Severn, mmn Buck. Emma's death was as Emma Child in Dec.qtr.1870 Westbury on Severn.
The older Mary (birth Dec.1864 Monmouth as Mary Ann Childes, mmn Kear, was the daughter of George Childes and Sophia Kear and this is the one who ended up as 'wife' to Henry John Batt (although I can't find marriage). Younger Mary b.1870 Blakeney Hill is the daughter of another George Childs by his first wife Emma Buck (died 1870), said Mary being cared for by the Allington family in 1871 and in 1881 back with her father George and his second wife Rebecca Grindle (married Sept.1871). It is this younger Mary who is the one who married George Miles.
So, we have 2 Mary's born 6 years apart (1864 and 1870), both daughters of a George Childs - in 1881 the father of Mary born 1864 Bream is a Stationary Engine Driver, the other, father of Mary b.1870 Blakeney, is a General Labourer - in conclusion the wife of George Miles (born Bream 1870) is Mary Childs b.1870 Blakeney. (Not helped by 1901/1911 census stating Mary Miles born Bream, but saved by the 1891 census clearly stating she was born Blakeney). From their differing occupations hopefully their marriage certificate should confirm which George was indeed her father.

Thanks Annette will have to purchase marriage certificate or find banns and thanks to everyone else

Just looked at Census for 1891 states Blakeney for Mary so enumerator must written wrong details later
-
Bream Church was an assumption on my part so perhaps married in Monmouth as son Harry born same year
-
1891 the child is George E
1901 the child is ‘Harry’
And I can’t see a birth for either ???
-

Possibly because Henry already had a wife Annie and daughter Lillie/Lilian by 1881. By 1891 Annie is now Mrs Stone (but doesn't marry until 1892) with Henry Batt, stepson in the household (Lilian with maternal grandparents) and in 1901 Lilian has joined them. All children have mmn coles
