I am trying to trace the life of Edith M Sexton who travelled to New Zealand in 1920 on the shop Reuhine from Southampton. Edith was born in Nayland in 1891 daughter of Thomas and Emma Sexton. I think she married and had a son Stuart.
-
There is this marriage on the New Zealand BDM
1921/313 Edith Mary Sexton Thomas More Thomson
I'll have a look and see what children they had.
-
Not coming up with any child called Stuart though.
By the way Welcome to Rootschat. :)
-
Thank you.
-
A possible death for Edith:-
1969/46963 Thomson Edith Mary 77Y
Comes up with a birth year of 1892 which is near enough.
-
That looks good. We know her middle name was actually Maud. It however this is the right person 1969 would tie in with the life lengths of her siblings in the UK. Thompson was a name that had been mentioned as a possible Married name. Thank you once again Colin King. Edith is my Great Aunt.
-
Where did her middle name of Maud come from? There are no births registered for an Edith Maud within the relevant time frame, only Edith Mary.
-
Edith Maud Sexton was born in Nayland Suffolk England 1891 and emigrated to New Zealand 1920 and married in New Zealand and we know she had a son Stuart. More than that we are at a loss.
-
So somewhere along the way she dropped the Mary and called herself Edith Maud? Below is her baptism record which I assume you have.
First name(s) Edith Mary
Last name Sexton
Birth year 1890
Baptism year 1890
Baptism date 26 Oct 1890

Father's first name(s) Thomas

Hmm a death for a Thomas More Thomson in 1969, same year as Edith.
1969/35956 Thomson Thomas More 73Y
Gives a birth year of 1896 which suggests that he was younger than Edith.

I'll have a look and see what children they had.
Should just point out that New Zealand Birth registration records ( at online Birth index) are only available up to "today's date" in the current year. On this index you'll only find "Births which occurred at least 100 years ago". ;)

** Now see this info was given previously.
I have looked at the Electoral rolls ( a useful tool, as sometimes children can be found sharing an address with their parents). No evidence found of children with Edith and Thomas More THOMSON though.

Hi COLINMKING
You may be able to find the name(s) of next-of-kin for Edith and Thomas More THOMSON by making contact with the Karori Cemetery in Wellington where their cremations took place.

Archives New Zealand have the following WW1 NZ Army File for a Thomas More THOMSON (whom I assume is the man who wed Edith SEXTON ?)
http://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE19731251
I haven't read through this file as yet, but did note that his next-of-kin was his mother whose name is given as "Mrs Stewart THOMSON" (of Bothwell, Scotland).
* Is this maybe where the name "Stuart" has come from ?
* Is the "supposed son" named "Stewart" .... rather than "Stuart" ??
[Note: My earlier search of Electoral rolls included both of these spellings ]
~ Lu
Edited to add : Yes, this is the husband of Edith - confirmed in Image 9 of Army file.
-
In case this is of interest ...
Thomas More THOMSON appears to have arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, as an unaccompanied 17-year-old, in 1914 per the ship "Ruapehu".
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-61R9-6CS?i=14&cc=1609792
Shown as "T. M. THOMSON " on the passenger and immigration lists -- occupation : clerk - last place of permanent residence was Scotland.

Just wanted to advise that the service in respect of newspaper look-ups / acccessibility to local newspapers, once offered by Wellington City Libraries - Central Library - is no longer available and hasn't been since the Central Library was vacated owing to earthquake damage some years back.
COLINMKING ... I have some further information for you - which includes accessing a newspaper death notice. Will add here in a following post.

Hi COLLINMKING
The National Library of New Zealand [ Natlib ] should be able to assist you in sourcing a copy of the Death notice for Stewart Thomas THOMSON.
You'll need to give them the following details >
THOMSON - Stewart Thomas
Died at Wellington on Sunday, 18 September 2009 :
Death/Funeral Notice : Published in "Dominion Post" (Wellington)
Here is the link to Natlib > https://natlib.govt.nz/
> go to top right-hand of page > use the "ask a librarian" facility.

The ^ above link will take you to the Probate file for Alfred William PRICKETT who was the father-in-law of Edith's son, Stewart Thomas THOMSON.
His Will can be found on the last page of the file and of interest is the reference to "my son-in-law Stewart THOMSON" whereby it states (paragraph 3) ..."that any benefit taken by my said son-in-law under this my will, shall be applied for the benefit of his children".
"... his children" suggests that Stewart had a family with wife Mary Alice (nee PRICKETT).
[ Sadly, Mary Alice THOMSON had died on 26 January 1963 and Alfred PRICKETT's Will was not drawn up until May of 1963, hence the reason she is not named in it. ]
I know that earlier here, mckha had searched electoral rolls for Stewart T. THOMSON and I'd also had a look to see if there may have been children living with their father ... but alas, no ... nothing found. Hopefully though, if you contact the National Library of NZ they may be able to locate the death notice for Stewart THOMPSON.

For COLINMKING > > ... * updated information *
I didn't really look too hard earlier on although I'd seen that there were "Private trees" noted on the ancestry.com site for both Mary Alice PRICKETT and one of her sisters, Freda Jean PRICKETT.
Have now noticed that there are a number of "public trees" also for same (viewable with ancestry subscription or via access at a puiblic library) :
So, if you can access the ancestry.com website you might like to try contacting the "tree owners" ?
[One of the children of Stewart and Mary Alice is fairly recently deceased - I'd rather not though publish the name in this thread ... can send it to you via PM if you wish. ]

I need to say the biggest Thank You ever for all the info forwarded to me. Edith Sexton was a Great Aunt of mine and an Aunt to my Grand parents 14 (yes 14) children,s. So you can imagine how big our family tree is. Now well over 2500 entries back to 1525. If anybody is related to Edith's family in New Zealand please get in touch as my knowledge of the Sexton Family goes back several .
Any more news would be fantastic as two of my Uncles (both in their 90's are still alive and have fond memories of their Aunt Edith. And Cousin Stewart who visited their home in Colchester England in WW2.
Once again Thank You Colin King
