Post by: Jaz on Wednesday 07 November 18 18:06 GMT (UK)
My great uncle Leonard Cook was a sapper in the Royal Engineers, he was a reservist called up 4/11/1914, he was in the retreat from the Mons, i cannot seem to find anything on him, this i found from a newspaper cutting, can anyone help please, thank you,

I'm afraid around 70% of the service documents from WW1 were destroyed in WW2 bombing.

Both my grandfathers served WW, have documents for one but not the other.  ::)

EDIT could you give more info like where he came from as there are documents for that name on Find my Past.

Was he 29 in 1919 and did his son die in 1917?

Hi medpat,

Thank you for replying, Leonard was born 1895 Tylorstown  Rhondda Glamorgan,  occupation a collier at Treorchy, i was told after he came out of the Army he joined  the Navy, not sure on that either, i feel the service papers papers may have been destroyed also ,as i cannot find his brothers  all joined and all survived,

Looks like it has been destroyed then. There could be medal card but there's very little info on that. I know it's frustrating as I have no idea what my maternal grandfather did.  >:(

Which Leonard Cook is he in the medal rolls/index cards? Should have the 14 Star.
