Title: Stuck on searching for Child history - James Jupp
Post by: manningnfawcett on Thursday 08 November 18 10:29 GMT (UK)
I have been doing my tree for years now and have hit a confusing problem.
My 2x Great Grandfather was James Jupp born 4 July 1863 Horsham
His mother my 3x great grandmother called Harriett Jupp born 1847 Horsham
Father is not on the birth certificate of James Jupp.
Harriett was a Servant for most of her life from a young age of 13.
James was born why Harriett was in service, I can not find James at all on the census of 1871.
James is not with his grandparents.
So I'm at a lost of what happened to poor James.
Can anyone help me please.

First guess: he had been fostered and was recorded with the foster parents surname.
Did the mother have any married sisters perhaps? I have certainly known census entries for step children in the step father's name despite them using their father's name in later life.

Researching side branches to SWMBO's main tree has thrown up  several cases of children being "redistributed" around the extended family.

Marriage in Hunston, 23 January 1864, of Harriett Jupp to James Harmer

A daughter Frances Harmer (mother Jupp) registered in March 1865, Westhampnett.

If we are looking at Hunston, rather than Horsham, this might be a possibility for Harriet in 1851. Parents William + Frances

If this is your James Jupp in Ashford, Kent, in 1891, he has a Thomas Harmer, 19, Sawyer, born Maidstone, as a lodger

Could this be him in Kent in 1881, as Harmer?

Thank you for you help.
Harriett Jupp never married.
She was always in service.
Her father was James Jupp 1811
Her mother was Charlotte Challen 1811

Hi so you have Harriet in 1881/1891 as aged 33 b Hunston General Servant, in Brighton, and 42 occ Ladys Maid in Hanover Square.
Census refs RG11/1076/98/11 and RG12/73/77/33 ( as Japp )

Hi
If you can confirm the whereabouts of your James Jupp, born 1863, in the later census years it would help.
Is he the sawyer in Kent?
There are two Harriett Jupps connected to Hunston. We need to make sure we have the right one!

I find myself agreeing with everyone else suggestions here and I think a) you have identified the wrong Harriett and b) there was no James Jupp born in Horsham, only the one baptised at Hunston.

Later census states James born Mundham, or North Mundham and this is an adjacent parish to Hunston and he must indeed be the one baptised 30/8/1863 Hunston, son of Harriet.

I believe this Harriet Jupp is the one who married James Harmer 23/1/1864 Hunston.   He was a Sawyer, son of James Harmer, Sawyer and Harriet Jupp dau. of William Jupp, Labourer.

I cannot at present find the Harmers in 1871 but an Isabella Harmer, mmn Jupp, was born June qtr.1868 Maidstone so family could be in Kent by then.

James Jupp married Mary Jane Butcher 6/10/1884 Ashford - I only have access to a transcription which doesn't show fathers names unfortunately, nor who the witnesses were.

There is at least one tree on Ancestry that seems to support the above findings.
