Title: Another Smith mystery
Post by: coppernob on Thursday 08 November 18 20:48 GMT (UK)
Where do I start when only having a name, D.o.b. & place of birth to find Army records?

Lancelot Reginald Smith, born 1889 in Norfolk. His family know he was in the Army, how do we go about finding more about him? I know, I know Smith is not the easiest name to research.

Hoping someone can guide/help us.  Thank you

The Medal Roll is the first place to look but there is no Lancelot Reginald or R Smith. There are 3 Lancelot Smiths (no middle initial).
There are no service records for him that I can see so probably one of the 60% lost in WW2.
The 1918 Electoral Rolls may show which Regt. he was in or local newspapers.

Thank you, this what I feared. Lucky with my own family but, got stuck trying to help a friend. A reg no would be a great help, they have nothing.
