Hi ,

How old was Alma Mary Burns/Hillman in 1901 ? , that might help in locating a death or possible sighting on the 1911 Census  :-\

Divorce records for this period are on Ancestry and I couldn't see one listed for this couple. It was a frequent occurrence for people to simply separate in those days.

On the GRO (General Register Office) Index you can check for children born during that time with a surname of Burns and a mother's maiden name of Hillman. You need to register but you can search for free.

If there are any it will give you an idea of dates the couple were together.

Was Alma born in Newton Abbott 1881?
Louisa Maud

If she was the Alma Mary Hillman whose birth was registered Sep qtr 1881 Newton Abbot, she was born on 21 July 1881 and baptised 14 Aug 1881 at St Paul's, Wolborough.

Parents: John (publican) and Mary Jane, of Queen St.

Yes AVM, parents on 1881 together at Wolborough, looks like Courtney Arms
John Hillman 40 born Ottery St Mary
Mary J 36 born Sidbury

Possible marriage John Hillman married Mary Jane Lock 1865  at E Stonehouse
John appears to have been a sea man up till about 1878

Alma at the moment is very evasive !!

John died in 1885 aged 45, and Mary Jane Hillman remarried the same year to Edmund William Brooking (29 Nov 1885 at Upton - both residing at 20 Union St).

Mary Jane claimed to be 35 at remarriage in 1885, having been 36 in 1881  :D  Perhaps age was a sensitive subject - Edmund (a traveller) was only "28" in 1885.

Her father: James Lock, carrier.

Edmund's father: James Frederick Brooking, miner.

Is this just a coincidence

1891 RG12/1145 FOLIO 144 PAGE 27
Arthur BORKING 33 publican born Dartmouth
Mary Jane 38 ?
Alma Mary 9 born Newton Abbot

I do believe John Hillman was a publican

That looks like a good find as I think Edmund was actually born & baptised Edmund William Arthur Brooking in 1862*. His Freemasonry records show him as a publican/licensed victualler, including a 1900 entry which shows him as a member of a lodge in Aylesbury where you have found him.

*meaning, if so, that he overstated his age on marriage.

Mary Jane claimed to be 21 on her first marriage in 1865, so her age is all over the place in the various records.

So, wonder where they were in 1901

It is so annoying that ages and names are all over the place.

In 1901 they ought to be at the True Briton Hotel, Strand, Walmer, Kent - according to his Freemason's record.

From various old threads it looks as though most of the 1901 census for Walmer is lost.

Oh, drat, but at sometime Alma must have been in Plymouth area,

I feel that marriage cert, if not already purchased might be a good idea
