Hello

I am looking for a Birth record please, for Thomas Hood born Hull 19th June 1826, for parentage?

On Seaman's No. 12,069 Register Ticket, Issued at London 28th January 1845, he stated his Abode was:-

Cathrine Hood, 28, Birth Country S
Constance Reckitt, 5, Born in same County No

Witnesses:- Tho's Hewson and Emma Hufton.

Cathrine Hood's Father Late ?Thoma Hood, Gardener

Agnes Hood, March Qtr 1854, District Sculcoates, aged 59.

Reckitt
Constance Reckitt, death December Qtr 1847, District Pontefract, aged 12. [possibly away at the Quaker School Ackworth, but precise location unknown until confirmed]

Constance born 18th of 11th Month 1835  in the Quaker Meeting Records of the Counties of Derby & Nottingham covering Balby, Tickhill & Blyth, born in the Parish called St Mary's Nottingham. Parents Isaac Reckitt and Ann Reckitt (born Coleby). Residence Nottingham, Cornfactor.

Isaac Reckitt's Mother was Katherine Reckitt born Massey.

I am particularly interested in this chap Thomas Hood as I believe him to be a possible relation to my Brickwall ancestor George Hood of Selby (marr. Selby 1815).

Hull was where he was living when the register was completed - it does not say he was born in Hull

Hi Carole and All

Please see the first extract, it actually says Thomas Hood was born at Hull and date of birth clearly stated.

His Ticket was issued in 1845 when he was 19.

First went to Sea in 1841.

This Wood for Hood has been a nuisance throughout my life  ;D

I found the Hoods in 1841 by setting it to Census, putting 1841 -/+ 0 yrs date box, with road name "John Street" in commas with space 'Drypool' outside commas (address info in the box for keywords I think), on FindMyPast then went through the John Street Drypool pages manually.

Thank you, Mark

Sorry for that oversight.  I have checked all censuses from 1851 - 1891 and cannot find an entry b Hull with that birth year.  As Andrew and Agnes were from Scotland I did the same search on the Scottish censuses - zilch

Andrew Hood buried at Drypool St Andrew, 4 Aug 1844, age 73
Agnes Hood buried same place 17 January 1854, age 59
Abode for both Drypool

Agnes was "Ind" in 1841, so may not turn out to be Andrew's wife? Just an observation, not a prediction!
William Shennan, 34, Woolen Draper, born Scotland, is in Prince (not Powell) Street in 1851. Looks like he married in 1842 as Shannon (his father's details as per John in 1846)

Hi

Thanks for looking, I only have one of the main providers and I was hoping someone would try the other.

I'm drawn to this Drypool address:-

Because my Father and late Grandmother link us to Scotland.

John Hood, Tanner, of the Parish of Selby (my 3 X Gt Grandfather), married at Sculcoates 1846, suggesting possible Hood relatives there.

The next Seaman's Ticket was issued to a John Burn of Whitby same day, whose Father William Burn was a Master Mariner.

The Master of the Industry and the Adventure vessels sailing to Selby 1806-1807 was Burn (only surnames given in newspapers).

A Hood Will 1942 (badly typed Probate copy) refers to an "oil painting of Burns"

A John Hood, Master Mariner, abode Selby, born Scarborough (who I can't positively link to, no local Selby baptism) sailed the Industry from Hull 1781 to 1786, then the Centurion late 1780s, Agent/owner was Thomas Hewson of Hull for the Centurion.

Catherine Hood's Marriage was Witnessed by Thos Hewson. Thomas Hewson was the Hull Agent for the Centurion, Master was John Hood, Mariner of Selby (late 1780s in Muster Rolls at Hull).

My Brickwall ancestor George Hood of Selby (4 X Gt Grandfather) was buried by the Quakers as "Not in Membership" in 1845.

George Hood's Son George Hood, married Ann Marrison of Blyth, Nottinghamshire. Constance Reckitt's Quaker Meeting at Nottingham was linked to Blyth.

Isaac Reckitt Quaker, later in parnership with J. J. Colman, (Daughter Constance above 1st post), links to Massey of Wainfleet and my George Hood of Selby entered into a property purchase and Massey of Selby late of Spalding (Quaker) was one of the parties signing the release.

We are not Quakers, but rather interesting that our Mustard always had to be Reckitt and Colman's! I'd be sent back by my Mum (now over 80) if it wasn't R & C Mustard!  ;D

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reckitt_and_Sons

The Hoods of Drypool are not Quakers and yet they have a Quaker child with them?

Thank you jonw65

Yes, I had the 1851 Census of William Shennan, Woollen Draper, born Scotland, of Prince Street, Kingston upon Hull, already downloaded, I thought there might be a link to the Marriage of John Shennan & Cathrine Hood.

I'm very pleased you pointed out my indecision over Powell, it is Prince Street, on the Catherine Hood, Marriage Certificate, I can see Prince Street, now, thank you.

Possibly John Shennan might also be from Scotland.

Hi

For Cathrine Hood search 1811 to 1820, so far, there is:-

Baptisms,
Kathrine Hood, parents John Hood and Agnes Lang, 1814, Parish Cardross.
Catherine Hood, parents John Hood and Agness McKeller 1820, Parish Greenock Old or West.
Catherine Cowan Hood, parents Alexander Hood and Janet Forbes, Cranston, 1815.

Got to try her forename without an 'e' on the end of Catherine / Cathrine and starting with a 'K' too.

Catherine Hood's, Marriage entry seemed to say her Father was Late [?]Thoma[?] Hood, Gardener, when she married, so no match yet.

Sadly my Grandmother died in the 1980s. My Grandfather was long dead.

Mark

Added: What does anyone make of the Father's forename for Cathrine Hood, on the Marriage extract (in first post)?

Hello All

Thank you Bee.

I wonder if some of these Hoods at Drypool in the 1841 Census are linked to James Goldie Hood from Dumfries?

James Goldie Hood had a Warehouse at Low Ousegate, York, in 1840 (Voting Appeal in newspaper 10th Oct 1840), before moving to Hessle by 1851 Census, giving his Birthplace as Dumfries.

 ----------

Memorials of St. Michael's, ... Dumfries

James Goldie, Bricklayer, Died 30th June 1803, Aged 67, with Agnes Blackstock his Spouse, their Daughter Agnes and her Husband, Thomas Hood, Gardener, Died 19th January 1818, Aged 65.

Scotlands People
James GOLDIE married Agnes BLACKSTOCK 17th April 1755, Dumfries.

Baptised at Dumfries
1795 January 18, "Agnes lawful daughter of Thomas Hood, Gardiner." [sic]
1805 September 22, "James lawful son of Thomas Hood, Gardener"
1803 November 27, "Catharine lawful daughter of Thomas Hood, Gardener"

The Catharine Hood in the 1841 Census at Drypool was 10 years younger (1841-28 = 1813)

However, when Catherine Hood, Spinster, full age, marries at Hull in 1846 she gives her Father as "Late Thoma Hood, Gardener".

Hello All

The Death Certificates have arrived.

Cause: Hydrothorax.
Informant and residence of informant: Robert TURNER - Present at the Death - 10 St Quintins Place, Drypool.

Thos Witty, Registrar.

 ----------

I'm wondering if Robert TURNER present at Andrew Hood's death was a Grandson of (or related to) Charles Turner and Maudland Hood who married at Selby 1794?

Two of their TURNER Grandchildren (John Hood Turner m.1847 and Martha Turner m.1850), both married at Hull to the same Grubb family.

Constance Reckitt, dying 18 December 1847 did indeed die at "Ackworth" aged 12 and was the Daughter of Isaac Reckitt of Hull, Starch Manufacturer, Rheumatism 6 days Inflamation of the Heart Perecardium 3 days Certified. Thos Pumphrey present at the Death Ackworth.

Isaac Reckitt is listed in the 606 page book - British Quakers in Commerce and Industry 1775 - 1920 by Edward H. Milligan.

 ----------

I shall definitely need to look at the Hoods above (born Scotland per 1841 Census) and also Turner above to check for any links to the 1812 to 1819 Hoods at Selby, especially as my George Hood, was buried at Selby in 1845 by the Quakers, as "Not in Membership."

 ----------

I have not a clue, who Thomas Hood, Gentleman might be, Father of Agnes Hood.

 ----------

Further note on Catherine Hood married John Shennan, at Hull in 1846 (Cathrine Hood also in the 1841 Census with Andrew Hood & Agnes Hood).

Three newspapers confirm Miss Hood was a Grocer, Drypool, but have erroneously spelt his name Shannon and Sharman.

Perhaps might account why I can't find her in later Census?

A partial update on my last message today. Regarding Agnes Hood, just found her in 1851.

Not very helpful for us to trace her Birth origin in Scotland!

Agnes Hood was just listed in the 1851 Census at Somercotes as A H , F, 57, born Scotland.

HO107 2360/726 page 28. [Catalogue reference & information from Family Search]

1851 Census, Holderness Road, Somercotes, Yorkshire. Registration District Sculcoates.
Robert Gofton, Head, Widower, 68, Proprietor of Lunatic Asylum, born Scarborough.
Mary Lamplough, Servant, 25, born Middleton, Yorkshire.
Arrabella Markham, Servant, 26, born Hull, Yorkshire.
E G , Female, 65, Hull, Yorkshire.
A H , Female, 57, Scotland.
A H , Female, 51, Hull, Yorkshire.
M M , Female, 48, Hull, Yorkshire.
S A , Female, 38, Hull, Yorkshire.
A D , Female, 26, Routh, Yorkshire.
M S L , Female, 24, Hull, Yorkshire.

That answers one question as to why Agnes Hood or Hood wouldn't show up in 1851! Mark

Sorry, but I think we can rule out Dumfries, because one of the Dumfries baptisms I previously suggested appears to have died young.

These Drypool Hoods are leaving no easy clues, they have Quaker associations, but buried in a Churchyard.

Or in my ancestor's case buried by the Selby Quakers, but never been a Quaker Member per Burial Note and also the York Meeting Minutes (at Leeds Univ. Spec. Coll.)

Hi Mark

It’s possible Agnes Hood was related to the Hoods from Dumfries.

Did you see the image of that 1851 census ? It says she was from Scotland, Dumfries.

Hello

Thank you Claire

Hood of Dumfries
The several Hoods of Dumfries were not really Gardeners, but Nurserymen.

Two William Hoods, one a Nuseryman and the other Nusery and Seedsman:- of Holybush and the other of Mount Pleasance, Mount Pleasant on map.

John Hood, Nurseryman, died 1804

Next to "Mount Pleasant" is/was "St Cathrine's Cottage" and South of that, is the word "Pleasance".

These Hoods seem to be buried St Michael's, Dumfries and Burns Memorial is there too.

Catherine Shennan
By the way Catherine Shennan should show up at Kirkcudbright in 1851 Census, but Scotlands People won't show that Census for some reason. I see other Census, but Catherine's, is a no show on S.P.

Family Search has ...
1851 Kirkcudbrightshire. Scotland.
Catherine Shennan, 35  born Kircud. (Born about 1816).

Robert Turner 1841, Wilson St., Drypool. Reg'n District Sculcoates
Robert Turner, 50, (50 to 54), Born Scotland (Birth year about 1787 - 1791)
Harriott Turner, 40, (40 to 44), Born Yorkshire.
Then several Huby listed.

I wonder if this Robert Turner was the one present at the death of Andrew Hood.

Hi

Looking at SW Scotland because Edwin Hood (From my George Hood via Wm Hood) has left an oil painting of Burns.

Plus these Hoods of Scottish origin have showed up at Drypool, Sculcoates and with some loose Quaker links too.

D & G, Scotland M.I.s - Shennan were linked to a Hood (18th Century).

Added: Rather interesting that on 16th March 1852 (Proclaimed in order to Marriage 14th March), a Catherine Shennan married a Thomas Turner at kirkpatrick Durham Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland (now in Dumfries & Galloway).

Note: In the image some numbers are M.I. Volume & Page numbers (not ages or grave numbers).

So looking at the actual 13th January 1854 Death Certificate for Agnes Hood, the image for the above Census and the book by J. A. R. and M. E. Bickford, Agnes Hood of Drypool, who was in the Quaker establishment / Asylum (1851) was from Dumfries.

Andrew Hood buried at Drypool St Andrew, 4 Aug 1844, age 73

Good Morning All

The mystery George Hood at the 1815 Selby Marriage had a witness, signing as COOKIN.

Something also interesting about Drypool, Yorkshire?

A Drypool Yorkshire Burial and a Sculcoates Marriage is transcribed as follows:-

Mary Cookin, Burial, 31st March 1822, Drypool, Yorkshire.

Thomas Cookin and Elizabeth Frost, Marriage, Sculcoates, 8th August 1831.
