Title: James Ro(d)ger Ownsworth
Post by: BW252 on Saturday 10 November 18 09:07 GMT (UK)
Anyone help with details of the father of James who was born 1874 and Baptised 24 May in Armathwaite.    Father given as James and mother Norah Leach.   I believe the father was born 1834?.    In particular looking for occupation of father.    Can find no details of marriage either.

Have you found this family on any other census?

Sorry should have put more detail on.   JRO was born to Norah Ann Leach in 1874.   Norah then married a Henry Slack in 1876.    He in turn died in Jan 1878.    She then married William Ackland in April 1878.    James is shown as Ackland in 1881 and Slack in 1891.    1881 birthplace Armathwaite and 1891 Carlisle!   I am trying to find the true father of James Roger!!!

I have another topic on this family on the England board but do not know how to paste it here.    Apologies!!!

The only offering I have so far is the following, might be well outside of the box as they say but here goes

I have found the registration of James Roger Ownsworth MMN Leach 1874 Carlisle

BUT 1881
I have a family by the name of Ackland
William and Norah Ann
there is a son James R Slack born circa 1875, can't find his registration so far
William H Slack Ackland 1879 Cardiff
Walter  months old born 1880 Cardiff
all with MMN Leach

I just wonder if there is any connection

Is it possible for you or someone to look at his baptism from the ledgers?

This reply as crossed with yours, pity I didn't know this before but it seems I am on the right track

You really ought to purchase his birth cert, that will give all the details you need

At least louisa maud is on the same track :)

If no one comes up with anything for the Bapt you may have to get the birth cert but I am pretty sure he is yours.

Finally received the birth cert of James Roger.    Fa James Ownsworth, Railway Labourer.    Mo Norah Ann Ownsworth formerly Leach.    JR born 5 May 1874 High Stand Huts Wetheral, Carlisle.

So that clears up the birth of James up.    However no trace of his father prior to this.

thanks again Trish and Louisa Maud

I had a look around for James Snr but with no luck matching occp 1871 Census.
I tried Onsworth/Unsworth/Ainsworth etc.

The address on his birth certificate, although gives Wetheral, the actual address appears to be in Cotehill, close to the railway viaduct.  This is on the Settle to Carlisle line, which didn't open to passengers until 1876 and was owned then by Midland Railway, so James snr may have been employed in its construction - just wondered if any records survive for Midland Railway employees from this time?

Gan Yam

thanks for that - have just found that 1871 address for Norah and family is Kirkby Thore which is about 25 miles from Wetheral.   Another place named as his birth is Armathwaite which is between the two.    I would imagine James as a railway labourer would have moved about quite a bit
