Title: Chas F PARTOON
Post by: Vibrato on Saturday 10 November 18 12:12 GMT (UK)
I am researching the Dundee Photographer CHAS F PARTOON.

As a young man he worked for William Ferrier the photograher and violin maker.

I understand that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries photograhers were sometimes violin makers. I have seen a violin labelled as having been made by Chas F Partoon of Dundee in 1896.

I would like to know if anyone knows more about his violin making before he became a prominent photographer with a studio at 55 Nethergate.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I must say I hadn’t previously heard of any generalised link between violin-making and photography, which don’t (to my mind) have an obvious overlap of skills, other than perhaps the craftsman’s eye and dexterity. Perhaps Charles and William were just particularly gifted?

Is he the Charles Frederick Partoon born in Liverpool on 23 January 1871 and buried in Dundee on 12 September 1940?

I see that he was the son of a Liverpool watchmaker (also Charles); by 1891 he was in Dundee as a photographic retoucher.

From his obit. (including photograph) iin the Dundee Evening Telegraph, 12 Sep 1940 -

"A great lover of music, Mr Partoon was a former president of Dundee Military band and he played the piano and clarinet in various orchestras."

The picture attached shows the interior of a violin labelled by Chas F Partoon in 1896.

The image, taken during repair, suggests that a previous label had been present.

It is not unknown for violin makers to refurbish an old instrument and attach their own label.

I prefer to think that Chas F Partoon made the violin himself.

Unless new information is forthcoming, my posts conclude with two images of the violin which was labelled by Chas F Partoon in 1896.

The violin has now been restored ready for another 100 years of music making.

A second image has been posted separately.

The Partoon Violin, shown in the previous photographs, has been repaired recently by Jeremy Walsh of Nunnery Mead Notton, Dorchester, Dorset.

Andrew Bellis, the bowmaker and violin repairer, has been involved with the repair work as an associate of Jeremy Walsh.

As well as being a violin maker, Jeremy is also a photographer.

The tradition of William Ferrier and Chas F Partoon still lives on!

For those interested in the violin labelled as by Chas F Partoon, it has been extensively restored by the luthier Mark O'Brien of Poole Violins, Dorset. It is now in fine playing condition.

www.geneanet.org records state Charles Partoon for the same St Mary record ...so I presume Lancbmd is a slight mistranscription
