Title: Help with Company shown on Photograph - Buckley and Crabtree
Post by: PaulJC on Sunday 11 November 18 15:03 GMT (UK)
Hi All,
I have a photograph that has a group of workers and their children outside a large house with the company name Buckley and Crabtree, 41 Shaw House. My wife's father and grandmother are on the photo so we can date it to the late 1920's. The family were all from Oldham so the address is local to that area. An internet search reveals nothing about the company so any information would be most welcomed.
Regards,
Paul

Do you mean that the house has a sign on it with the name and address or that the name and address are added to the photo?
Is it a formal photo?

The building has the name on it (a small plaque by the door) and its a large group (perhaps 70 plus) of workers and their children.

What employment did your relatives follow?

I understand that they worked mainly in the cotton mills.

On the photograph are the people dressed for work or an outing, perhaps?
Radcliffe wondered about a Holiday home - are there any more details in the photo?

Maybe it would help if you could post the photo on here

No info on the company but there is a Buckley New Mill in Uppermill near Saddleworth that I can see on an old map - it’s been converted into apartments. It’s bottom left on the map below Saddleworth Station.

There has been for sale a “Shaw House” on Shaw Lane which is a stones throw away - see link below

Could be something or nothing

A bit too early, but it does list ...
George Buckley, Norman Mill, Rochdale Rd, Oldham
Buckley & Broadbent, Britannia Mill, Bellfield, and Clarksfield Mill, Lees
...and...
Crabtree Mill, Bridgewater St, Oldham

I wonder if that is a boarding house at a Holiday resort?
There is an advertisement on the wall - ‘Royal Pav..’ Pavilion perhaps?
Charleys and Gloria Sw? Swanson maybe but she wasn’t in Charley’s Aunt, I don’t think.
Possibility?

Thanks,

I also checked the poster and believe it might be the Royal Pavillion Theatre in Blackpool showing Charleys Aunt. You are right that Gloria Swanson was not in the movie although there was a version made in 1925.

I am starting to think that this is a holiday home for workers and their children from the two named mills in Oldham.

There is a house next door.
I am thinking it is a Boarding house rather than a holiday home for mill workers and that is the name of the proprietors.

Adding to my doubts about this- everyone would be on holiday at Oldham Wakes so there wouldn’t be business during the year for the home.

Thats an interesting point and its not as if they could change the name sign every few weeks to suit different circumstances.

From what I know of Lancashire mill owners, they didn't offer many benefits to the work force, and would consider giving time off for a holiday would be more than generous.

The film "Charley's Aunt" was released in December 1930, so the photo could date from 1931.
There were five Gloria Swanson films in the 1930s

This is Shaw Road, Blackpool, now. Look at the similarity of the gate posts, maybe even the iron railings ... but 41 is the other way round. So maybe nearby ??

If you scroll right No. 41 is the second next yellow door you come to. There is a normal house next door of similar style, no room for billboard. So not Blackpool, at least not Shaw Rd.

It says 'Shaw House', that doesn't necessarily mean that it is/was on Shaw Rd/Dr etc.

Having looked at Royal Pavilion Theatre, Rigby Rd., Blackpool I don't think it's that one either.

For what it’s worth think it is number 41, any street anywhere and shaw house is the house name.

Is it a coincidence that Shaw is a district of Oldham, has the feel of a charity outing of some sort to me.

There was a Royal Pavilion cinema in Royton ( 3 miles from Oldham town centre). I've also seen a reference to one in Mossley ( 5 miles from Oldham), and there was one in Rawtenstall (21 miles).

Not sure what you mean by this. It is a poster for the theatre not the building. Do you mean you don’t think the poster is advertising the Blackpool theatre?

It could be possible that the Buckley and Crabtree families from Shaw opened a boarding house in a holiday place. Blackpool most likely.
Then again, it might be nothing like this ;)

There was a Harriett Crabtree, right age, with a husband Thomas and a Niece, Hannah Buckley that lived in Shaw, at one point.

You're very welcome. First visit to the site for a while. The break must have done me some good!

Incidentally, the premises either side also appear to be Company Houses.

Eric.

Are they the same Company?
I was thinking that was a lot of people to be staying in that one house, there's 50 people in that photo, counting the two lurking behind the curtains. ☺

Looking at the OED and at contemporary newspaper ads, a "company house" was just another term for a boarding house, lodging house, guest house etc.

The OED cites this reference from the Guardian of 20 April 1920:

" Taking into account the rate of exchange..this brings Monte Carlo hotel rates, for English visitors.., down to the level of a Blackpool company-house."

I believe that Oldham wakes began with the fourth week in June, so probably Monday 22 June 1931. The people are not in Sunday Best for going to church.

There seem to be a lot more adult women than men. Maybe some of the party had already sloped off to the pub. ;D
