Title: Identity of Car Make and Model
Post by: ikas on Sunday 11 November 18 15:08 GMT (UK)
Not sure the best place to post this. Perhaps a mod will move it if there is a better forum for it.

I would like to identify the make and model of the car in this photo. Photo circa 1960 but I believe the plate means it was registered in Dundee between Jan 1932 and Jan 1948.

TIA

I am no expert but it looks to me like a Morris 10 or Morris 8 c1940s.

Looks a bit like this, though hubcaps are different.

Looks like a late 1930s Rover to me.

Following Handypandys suggestion link above has a  1936 Rover.

I think our photo shows a car whose front doors are hinged at the front, and from what I've found, that may rule out the Morris 8 and 10. Some Rovers seem to have rear-hinged doors too, but another thing with them is that the front mudguards seem to have a cut out above the bumper, rather than going more or less all the way down.

I was wondering about an Austin 10 or 12, though to me the radiator grille doesn't look quite right. Ours is curved with a thicker bar in the middle (like a Rover), whereas the Austin ones look flatter and without the thicker bar.

I am struggling to find one where the headlamps are mounted with those large fittings to the sides of the radiator grill.

Possibly a standard flying 10. bur the immediate post war period 1947-1950 is hard as not many cars were produced and photographs are hard to find.

Apparently you can get a copy of the car's registration records from Dundee City Archives, which will tell you the make of car and the name and address of the original owner:

What do we think about a Vauxhall, what I thought was just sun glare could be the fluting on the side of the bonnet, and they definitely fixed the headlamps like that.

Sticking my neck out here ;D ;D

Notice the number plate fixed to the centre of the front bumper,
Vauxhall dispensed with the starting handle.

I'd wondered about a Standard or a Triumph....

I’m with Vauxhall, going by the flutes on the bonnet.

Well done, Mike - I think you've got it.

Having now seen the Vauxhall, I think I can just about make out on our photo the shape of the flying thingy on top of the radiator/bonnet. It's not really clear enough to use as an identifying feature on its own, but it does help to corroborate the other evidence.

Back in 1948 our next door neighbor had two of them a 10 and a 14, I knew I had seen one
somewhere :) :)

Thanks to all for helping me on this. I think Mike is spot on.

I did try the Dundee Archives website before posting but they did not list any YJ regs only TS. The pdf  arthurk has provided a link to suggests the records do exist but I guess not all have been digitised. I will contact them to confirm Mike's identification.

Thanks again

I've only just seen this. My father had a 1938 Vauxhall 14. It spent the War on chocks in the garage. Attached pic. must be just post war. with my mother. It had been resprayed light green by ICI, previously black. Next car was a Ford V8 Pilot.

It looks like the pic. was taken in Burnham Beeches, South Bucks.

Vauxhall 14

I was thinking a Vauxhall 14-6 myself, but you're definitely correct. reducing the glare, you can clearly make out the radiator cap/motometer and grill badge.

Just got an e-mail from Dundee archives - thanks arthurk  :). They do have records for YJ registrations but not digitised as yet. Record for YJ5982 states :

Description:12.0 Vauxhall Saloon,
Colour: Chromatic grey
Date of Registration: 24th May 1938

My relative must have purchased it second hand as he is not the listed owner.

Thanks to all.

It looks like my 14 but the grille looks a bit different, but I put that down to light glare.
