Title: Union Workhouse nearest New Bury, Farnworth, Lancs?
Post by: LH on Tuesday 13 November 18 13:13 GMT (UK)
Hello

Can anyone point me in the right direction PLEASE.

I'm not familiar with the location, nevermind the records, but need to find out whether records exist to show inmates and staff at the Union Workhouse nearest to New Bury, Farnworth, Lancs.

I'm interested in the years 1882-1883.

Would greatly appreciate help here.

Thanks all

Thanks Rosie

Tried that website, but as I don't know which Workhouse, I'm finding the site very difficult to navigate.

Wonder if anyone can tell me which Workhouse.... and whether records exist.

Kindest regards

If you look at the link I gave you for Bolton Workhouse and scroll down to 'After 1834'  It mentions the puchase of Fishpool Farm, Farnworth in 1856

Also mentioned on here

Hi again

Sincerest thanks.  The nudge you gave was enough to make me re-read that link and I've emailed Bolton to see if they hold names for the relevant family in the year 1882/83.

I've battled the Workhouse site several times and became more and more confused.

Thanks.

Bolton Union Workhouse was at Fishpool, Farnworth. It eventually became Townley's Hospital, where my brother was born (I arrived a couple of years later at what had been Chorley's Workhouse.

Union Workhouses served quite large districts, with centralisation, and thus cost reduction, being an aim.

The Bolton workhouse records are on microfilm at Bolton Library & Archives, next to the town hall. The admittance and discharge registers indicate the place where the person was living, and sometimes give some reason for admittance.

It took me some time to locate the records for my  ggg grandmother she was admitted in 1872 and died there in 1897.

Hello

Yes, I emailed a few days ago, asking whether hold records for the relevant year.... but am still awaiting a reply.  Do you know whether they respond to emails?

Hopefully the information I'm seeking will be found.

Thank you again

The records are there - I went through the microfilms. However there was no index, so it might be a long job. When I did it, it took me the best part of a day, with breaks to let my eyes recover, because I had to search 25 years-worth. Other names kept raising my attention; a "Peter Kay" was a regular. A brewer by trade, he must have made rotten beer, because he would be back within a couple of months of leaving.

I remember there was one person putting entries in the registers who was obsessed with decorating his writing. Where some might add a "curly bit" to a letter, he went in for spirals. I think the overseers must have eventually complained about the waste of ink. ;D
