Snippet from the Shepton Mallet Journal of Friday, 2nd Feb 1923 reads

" In the Bridgewater section of the Manchester Ship Canal the body of John Walmesley, a retired Blacksmith, was discovered on Monday. The deceased was 70 years of age and had been missing for seventeen days."

There were two newspapers extant in Leigh at that time:- Leigh Chronicle and Leigh Journal.
They often reported on inquests, my great uncle was killed at Sovereign Pit in 1921 and both papers had reports of inquest.
Copies are on microfilm at Leigh Local History Studies.
Unfortunately they are undergoing re-organisation at the moment. See here (https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Resident/Museums-archives/Wigan-Archives/index.aspx)
