Title: John Lyons Hall, Cumberland Township, Ottawa
Post by: hallmark on Wednesday 14 November 18 16:07 GMT (UK)
Hi

Been trying to find information on John Lyons Hall, Cumberland Township, Ottawa, after his birth there in 1859 please.

Wesleyan Methodist.

Parents:  Thomas and Eliza Jane Hall

I have all information on Parents etc before 1859.

Can not find any information on parents or him after 1859 and would welcome advice on Sources I could check please.

I have tried quite a few times but so far end up with brickwall for anything after 1859.

Also, if Thomas and Eliza Jane Hall had a property there, are there records for dates they got it or left it?

I don't mind researching, so advice on Sources very welcome!

Thank you.

The actual image of the baptism indicates he was born on 26 November 1859 and baptized 6 February 1859, so one of the dates is wrong, and I'll guess he was born 26 November 1858.

Thank you!

Yes I often wondered if maybe they lived a distance away and maybe born Feb and not Baptized until Nov.

Rather than centering in on the Dates etc, it is finding him and his Parents after this that I'm trying to concentrate on.

For now.... I need to move forward in time if possible.

Advice on Sources etc to check Post 1859 welcomed please.

In the 1866-67 Carleton & Russell Directory, there is a Thomas Hall in Cumberland Township listed as living on Lot 12, Concession 1.  There is also a John Hall noted on Lot 13, Concession 5:

Thank you.

John would not be related to Thomas!

He did have a brother John, but he lived and died in Ireland.  Thomas Hall is the only one who went to Canada.

This Thomas shows up in the 1871 Census has 26 years of age, born in Ontario, living with a Sarah Kennedy, aged 60, born Ireland.  No wife or children with Thomas.

Yes, I have searched and Searched before but they totally disappeared!

I don't know anything else, even if they lived there or not.  What is there is all I have on John Lyons Hall.

I waded through all the Canadian Cemeteries, photographed, online.... found one John Lyons Hall but not the one I wanted!

Also.....forget how, but found Eliza Jane's brother marrying in Canada, after thrashing the Internet to death I found him and his wife and children in New Zealand, their descendants there, contacted one who never heard of Thomas and Eliza Jane and were very surprised I had a sister for theirs!

Their ship records show mine didn't travel with them also.

I have search Canadian Census...but will try again using John L etc etc and age at Census.

Believe me.... I have tried going through, over, under and around this brickwall   ;D

I had wondered if they were even in Cumberland Township, given that it's WAY east of Toronto and why they would have moved there after being married in Toronto. Who was the minister that married them?  I know that Rev. Case was in Cumberland during that time period so that information is correct.

Edit:  Found the original marriage. John Jennings was the minister and he was definitely in Toronto at the time.

Yes that is them!   ;D  100%

They then pop up in Cumberland with the Baptism.

Being a Methodist Baptism doesn't surprise me as Thomas Hall's g/father was a Methodist Minister in Ireland.

These are the only 2 sightings of them.

So what took them to Ottawa?  A four-hour drive from Toronto by today's standards?  Who was there -- a member of the family?

So, here's the big question ... how did you know they existed when you first started researching them?

So, here's the big question ... how did you know they existed when you first started researching them?

My g/aunt wrote out the family history...then step by step working from myself to my father, g/father, his Marriage which named his father.. then this Marriage which named his father and then that Marriage.

All done step by step by step, sourcing each and everything that was on the written history.

We then run out of Civil Registrations.... so looked at the Church Registers for marriage of Thomas Hall's father Matthew and mother Hannah and at same time anything on siblings, then searched Register for birth of Hannah Lyons and siblings plus marriage of her Parents.

Then also wrote down what is on the Lyons gravestone.

The only one I could not find was Thomas Hall of Tonycoogan.....

So, after thrashing the Internet to Death  I googled   Thomas Hall   Toneycoogan after trying many other things!

and got this  http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/presby58.htm   which is how I discovered him in Canada.

And then, as the old saying goes....  "The rest is mystery!"   ;D
