Title: HARRY JAMES & DOROTHY MAY PARKER NEE BEALE
Post by: anpefa1 on Thursday 15 November 18 21:58 GMT (UK)
Dorothy May Beale born May 1897 Maidenhead Berkshire married March 1915 Harry James Parker born C1894 Father Tom Benson Parker.
They emigrated to Alberta Canada in 1920. they are indicated on the Canadian 1921 census which seems to indicate that HJP was previously there in 1904? so may have had relatives there.
There may have been 3 children from the marriage.
the marriage cert indicates that he was a soldier in the Yorkshire regt but have not found a record yet.
have yet to research ships records to confirm relevant children.

to paraphrase, is there anyone related out there?

Tony

Your Harry was with his parents in 1911 Wakefield, so would it not be unlikely he was in Canada in 1904 ?

Hmmm................

The names agree - Henry/Harry and Dorothy but details differ from the original information - on the find a grave entry this Henry James Parker seems to be the adopted son of a Mrs William Taylor and it also says he was born in Southampton/Bournemouth  ??? On the attestation papers he is the son of Mrs H A Ford of Southampton.  ???
Whereas op is looking for Harry Parker born 1894 Wakefield Yorkshire -  with his parents and siblings in 1911

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWVL-MR3

Attestation papers give this Henry James Parker date of birth as 21 July 1894. Southampton. Eng.

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=567206

http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B7588-S049

Canada Voters List 1957 - shows Henry James Parker (customs Fed Government) and Dorothy Parker - 316 7 th Ave North East Calgary.  (This address agrees with the death notice in a reply above for Dorothy Parker.)

Canada Voters List 1940 shoes Henry J Parker - clerk and Mrs Henry Parker at the same address as above.

There is a border crossing from Canada to USA 31 August 1941 -  Harry James Parker - 21 Jan 1894 mentions wife Dorothy (Nidd  ???) Parker - holiday trip - think it says Harry arrived Halifax NS July 1904. (writing is so difficult to read)

Could this Harry have been a home child  ???

I, too, have been wondering about the apparent differences and whether Henry was a Home Child who ended up with the Taylor family. There are a Henry and a John Parker ages 7 and 5 as visitors in a household in Sussex (if I remember correctly) in the 1901 census. They were from the Barnardo Home. Unfortunately it doesn't give a birth place for the boys.

A Henry J and a John M ages 11 and 9 are on a ship to Canada in 1905 which differs a bit to 1904 but I would think this is probably the same John.

Reading through this John's service file, you will find his mother listed as a Mrs Ford. GRO index has what looks like births for these 2 boys as Ford, mmn Parker.....Henry James and John Michael, RD Christchurch, which is where Bournemouth can be found.

Something doesn't seem to add up, or something?

PB

Added: your last posts have arrived while I was typing this one, *Sandra*, so I will post it. As you say, back to the drawing board.....doesn't look like this is the correct Harry and Dorothy.

We are not allowed to post from the 1939 Register but using the free index gives a Harry b. 1891 and Dorothy b. 1897. Possible daughter Lillian appears to have married an Allan. She can be found in the index. All are in Kent.

The OP would need to look up the image for birth details to clarify.

I think this might be the family.

many thanks to you for your tremendous efforts.

I agree that some info goes in the correct direction but then migrates to different confusing tangents.

Henry/Harry is commonly used but I have no reference to Henry in this instance.

the UK 1911 census, the marriage cert and the Canadian document refer to Harry.

I have Dorothy May (my wife's Great Aunt) on the 1901 and 1911 UK census and her birth and marriage certs so May 1897 and March 1915 is correct.
Harry is 21 and Dorothy 18.

the 1911 UK census shows that Harry's age as 19, the Canadian document shows Harry is 26 and Dorothy 25 (my copy of the document is microscopic so..) the date of immigration shows 1920 for Dorothy and 1904 (albeit heavily gone over) for Harry! hence if he visited previously there may be relatives involved as he would have been quite young then.

Fanny Steel is most likely as a match for the Wakefield 1911 census and the BMD name points to the Harry DOB.

the marriage cert indicates Harry is or was attached to the King's own Yorks light artillery regt. so another +.

Dorothy Nidd is a red herring as I believe is Lilian as well. so far all I have is Dorothy May born 1916
in Berkshire, Maidenhead being the family stamping ground.

the Bournemouth/Southampton connection is extremely confusing and I have disregarded this for now.

the death notice is eerie as we live in Queens Park !!!

I'll be back, as your man says.

It could be a massive coincidence that they have the same names and years of birth  :-\

If it is the Wakefield connection where does the middle name "James" come from - it is not in any other documentation so far ?

You seem to be aware of a possible daughter Dorothy M Parker born 1916 but failed to mention her ?  She doesn't seem to appear on any passenger list to Canada so far ?

I've been following this, and getting quite confused!  And this might just add to the confusion, but the attached obit for Dorothy from the Calgary Herald, 24 Dec 1962 indicates a sister, Rose Hyder.  Rose Hyder's marriage shows her maiden name as Waterman....
There is also a mention of a niece:

Looking at the earlier posts - we could not tie up a Harry James Parker (from Yorkshire) born 1894.
There was a birth in 1891 of a Harry Parker to Tom Benson Parker and Fanny Steel and he appears to have served in the Kings Own York light Artillery -

It looks as if Harry James Parker (and his brother John Parker) were Barnardo children - both children had a mother - maiden surname Ford. They appear on a UK 1901 census in a Barnardo Home in Sussex I think it was.

So far we could not find a passenger list for Harry and Dorothy nee Beale Parker coming to Canada.

But did find reference to a Dorothy Nidd immigrating in 1919 to marry H J Parker.  It is this couple who seem to be on the 1921 census (married by that stage)

The poster seems to have the birth certificate for Dorothy May Beale. I have asked if we could have the exact birth date - that might prove or disprove if that couple lived in Orpington Kent  ???

Thanks for the summary, Sandra.... my eyes aren't what they used to be for scanning posts!

The father of Harry was given in the original post as Tom Benson Parker.  I found a newspaper article on him regarding the tragic death of one of his sons, Walter, in 1912 (if I remember correctly), and it just doesn't strike me as a family that would have to send their kids off...  ???

No we don't think that the Harry who married Dorothy Nidd and lived and passed in Calgary is the one the poster is looking for. There is nothing to suggest that Harry James Parker born 1894 son of Tom Benson Parker was in Canada so far.
Dorothy Nidd mentions her brother on the Canada Ocean arrivals form - that looks like Mr J Nidd of Primrose Hill (which could be James or John Nidd)  -

The sister mentioned in the obituary of Isabel Mary Nee Nidd Chalmers I think must be Rosina Nidd born Q2 - 1892 London - 1a 637

Rosina married Sydney J Hyder - Decmber 1921.

I just took another look.... they ran out of room for new surnames for her.... try "Fox", it's crammed into the next column, and although they have used the different coloured inks, I can't match any surname to a date, so the order of names is going to be a chore.

hello friends

I intend to look for the UK 1901 census tomorrow, meantime, the 1911 census (and I am assuming I am barking up the right tree) indicates that Harry (then aged 19) was one of 8 siblings 2 of whom died prior to the 1911 census. Father & Mother Tom Benson Parker & Fanny Parker.

the Benson element of the name may indicate a grandmothers maiden name, something I have come across before in family research and 1 of the brothers has the middle name Fountain. Incidentally there is a brother John indicated on the census aged 13. it can only get worse!

the marriage certificate shows Tom Benson Parker to be Harry's father, they married in Maidenhead.

Dorothy was born on 30 May 1897.

the Canadian document headed Population 6th census of Canada 1921 Calgary includes the name Harry James, the only indication of the name James thus far age 26 and living at 1022 16th Avenue with Dorothy.

Harry's census age does not tie up with his marriage yet his marriage age ties up with the Canadian document.

Check the 1939 Register for Orpington Kent and you will find who you are looking for. The birth date fits exactly. Do Harry and Dorothy were still in the UK.
The information we have given as regards daughter Lilian is correct, the other one Dorothy M Parker born in 1916 we haven't found yet.
Perhaps if you purchase her birth certificate, an exact date might help find her.

Wow!!! And wow again!!!

I go away for the weekend and come back to find 6 more pages on this thread! Great work everyone.

It will take me a bit of time to digest everything but with a quick run through I do agree that Harry and Dorothy remained in England. I didn't know how far I would be allowed to go with posting about the 1939 Register but it certainly appeared that they were in Orpington.

And I still think the Harry/Henry who came to Canada about 1904/5 was possibly a Home Child. He served in the Canadian forces in WW1 and ended up with an amputated lower leg. I would suspect that he met Dorothy while in England and she followed him to Canada.

hello friends

what can I say? I take the proverbial hat off to you and extend my gratitude for the impressive effort you have made on our behalf, if it was not for your expertise we would still be wasting precious time looking in the wrong direction.

I certainly was barking up the wrong tree, I have more than sufficient information to enable me to eventually complete that chapter of the family tree to the extent that I can mark this request as complete.

all enjoy the well earned ZZZZZZZ
