Hi
I can't get anything other than Ronald McElwain out of my brain . . . . .
Would you tell us where you found it?

Might she have been adopted? Do you have Catherine through the censuses from birth to 1911? And Ronald & Catherine?

I see that she was 115 45 when she died. Who was the informant? They may not know the full details.

When did Catherine marry William Devine?

Is this a Scottish Death Certificate?

In Scotland, they often use the unmarried (nee) surnames on Headstones even when they were married, I've just been looking at some Scottish M.I.

Some were not officially married and were relationships by habit and repute.

I see from the 1871 that she was born Stirlingshire and on the 1861, Dunbartonshire circa 1834/36. Have you checker for a baptism?

Hi

I've seen the copy in the link now and uncertain if my comment was relevant, Mark

She was in both the census mentions and the area of Dumbartonshire I think borders Stirlingshire. I have tried finding her baptism records on Scotlands people and keep coming up blank. I have a date of 1836 for her birth. I found this death certificate on Scotlands people. The informant of the death was William Devine her husband. I am completely at a loss.  :'(

I can't find a marriage for them or registrations for the children, Eliza(beth) and Joseph. Do you have anything on these events that might give some info -even a marriage for one of the children  :-\

While looking for info on FS, I did find a Catherine Corrigan married to an  Edward Devine. Are you sure her ms was Corrigan?

Just wondering where you found that she'd died circa 1886 and that her MS was Corrigan?  Maybe someone later on gave the wrong info  :-\

Add - not found any Catherine and Ronald McQueen in Stirlingshire or Dunbartonshire on the 1841 - may have missed them but .......

There are these births showing on Familysearch

Elizabeth Devine 5 June 1859 Cathcart Parents William Devine and Catherine McCallum

Joseph Divine 16 March 1861 Cathcart Parents William Divine and Catherine McCallum (SP also shows this birth with surname Divine).

James Devine 30 Sept 1863 Mearns, Renfrewshire Parents William Devine and Catherine Corrigan

Marriages William Divine and Catherine McCallum 4 March 1859 Cathcart

William Devine and Catherine Corrigan 19 Nov 1854 Mearns.

Can you indicate where the family you are interested in are in 1881? I seem to have the family that Gadget found in 1871.

William

Added - there is also a birth for a James Devine 22 Aug 1857 in Mearns with parents Wiliam Devine and Catherine Corrigan

WOW lots of questions... Both William Devine and Catherine Corrigan married in 1854 at Barrhead this is not the marriage that is recorded in Mearns on the 19th. Their children are James 1857-1859, Elizabeth 1860?, Joseph 1861, Helen 1863?, and James 1863. I have his birth certificate and the marriage is recorded as 1854 Barrhead. I have the death certificate of Catherine who died 7 April 1884 at the Royal Infirmary Glasgow. I cannot find any of them on the 1881 census. Very strange.

Rob

I'm sure that the marraige  that Millmoor has found in Mearns is correct. The entry is for proclamation  (banns) on the 19th and then they probably married on the 24th*

James birth registration is also in Mearns.

Gadget

* add or Catherine, as informant on James's birth reg, just forgot which day it was.

I have to say that I do not think the family in Cathcart is correct - I think that is the family of William Devine and Catherine McCallum.

I have now found the following births using Familysearch;

Charles Devan birth 24 May 1859 Mearns Parents William Devan and Catherine Corrigan

William Devine birth 21 Nov 1855 Mearns Parents William Devine and Catherine Corrigan

Mary Devine birth 16 June 1861 Mearns Parents William Devine and Catherine Corrigan

This family seems to have been transcribed as Diven on the 1861 census and as Devais in 1871 (on Scotlands People). The downside is that the James showing  in 1871 there is 0 years old. They are living in Mearns.

Looking at what I think is your tree on Ancestry you have James Devine married to Margaret Murray - they would appear to have married in Port Glasgow in 1882, she is recorded as Maggie Murray. If you have not done so I would be inclined to download that marriage to make sure that you have the correct names for James's parents.

William

If it's the same family that I've found recently, Catherine is b. Ireland. Also, William, snr, isn't listed with them. Transcription only.

Hi Millmoor, We you are correct with the marriage certificate. Completely incorrect parent I have, looking at the attached. It looks like James's parents are Francis Devine and Margaret Campbell. However, on James birth certificate the marriage is recorded as 1854 in Barrhead. Back to the drawing board i think.

From Familysearch, James son of Francis Devine and Margaret Campbell was actually born 10 Aug 1856 ( in Paisley) so was actually 26 ( not 21) when he married Maggie ( who really was only 15 having been born 3/5/1866 in Greenock). Margaret’s father was actually Thomas ( not Francis).
can you clarify which line it is you are searching ie James son of William and Catherine ( Corrigan) or James son of Francis and Margaret (Campbell).

Hi Rob

Looking at the names of the children of James Devine and Margaret Murray there certainly seems to be a naming pattern going on and so parents of James called Francis and Margaret does make sense.

Do you have the death cert. for James Devine? Are the parents names the same as on the marriage cert?

William

Hi Millmoor, sorry i has been away for a few weeks. I have tried finding the death of James Devine and cannot trace this. Seems odd really. The last I have seen of him was on the 1911 Census living in Port Glasgow as a ship plate riveter, Margaret his wife is not recorded on this as she would have been dead since 1909.

Hi Rob

I think his death is likely to be the one showing on Scotland's People  in Port Glasgow in 1934.

Millmoor, that makes sense. He is the widower of Margaret Murray. Father Francis Devine and Mother Margaret Campbell. The information was his son Francis Devine. Looks like I got this one wrong. Thanks for your help on this.
