Title: George Hercomb - Who was his first wife?
Post by: GenesA on Sunday 18 November 18 17:53 GMT (UK)
George Hercomb was married to Sarah Jenkins on 29 November 1855 in Evesham in Worcestershire. George was 37 (born circa 1818), a widower and a tailor. His father's name was Thomas Hercomb, deceased, who was also a tailor. The witnesses were George and Eliza March who were Sarah's relations. The 1861 census and George's death record in 1868 give a different birth year for him - circa 1810/1811.

I am really struggling to find George in the 1841 and 1851 censuses but this would maybe be helped by finding his first marriage?

Did he bring any children along to the marriage to Sarah?

In 1861 are there older children that could be from his first marriage.

If Hercomb is an unusual name you could look for a youngish female death to see if she was his wife.

There weren’t any children brought to the marriage. All his children were born after his marriage to Sarah.

Right thanks can't look for those then.

Just for info the 1855 marriage is under the spelling Hurcomb.

Is this the right census with George born Scotland?

If so he could be living there in 1841/1851 and married his first wife there  :-\

1861

George Hurcomb 50
Sarah 31
Annie 4
Albert G 4 months?

There's a Fanny Hurcomb b c1853 who dies in Evesham in 1858. I can;t find a matching birth registration   (the Frances Ann b Swansea is still alive in 1861)

Again - possibly in Scotland?

If the scottish connection is correct, there are some Hurcombs with Ayrshire roots

Fanny looks possible for a daughter doesn't she, I wonder when the family came to Evesham, maybe after the death of his first wife.

Yes, he was apparently born in Scotland. I always took George’s birthplace with a pinch of salt - especially since Hercomb isn’t a very Scottish sounding name. But it might explain why I can’t find him in the censuses

Could possibly be an illegitimate Fanny Jenkins, mother Sarah.

Is there anyway I could look more into Fanny's parentage without a birth certificate?

Possible burial of the Fanny already mentioned by Mabel Bagshawe is indexed on FamilySearch

There is this birth
Dec 1853 Kings Norton 6c 357

mother's maiden surname -
(so likely was illegitimate)

Baptism at Kings Norton
27 January 1854
Fanny

Thanks, jonw65. Not sure how Sarah got to Kings Norton although she was orphaned at 16 and the Jenkins' children seem to be all over the place.

So I've found Sarah in 1851 - working as a servant in Oldbury in Worcestershire. Do you think Fanny's middle name "Knight" was Sarah's way of naming the father?

Middle names often do give a big clue as to the father.

George has been a brick wall of mine for a very long but after receiving my DNA results last year, I’ve been working through my matches slowly but surely. One DNA cousin of mine stands out in particular as he is appears to be the great grandson of a lady named Emily Hercomb, born around 1836 in Uley in Gloucestershire. Not only that but he is also a DNA match with a cousin of mine who also happens to be directly descended from George Hercomb. So I have the right line.

I’ve looked into this further and it seems that Emily Hercomb was the daughter of Jesse Hercomb and his wife Elizabeth. Jesse is the son of Tobit and Ruth Hercomb AND had a brother named Thomas Hercomb, a tailor. MY George Hercomb claimed that his father was Thomas Hercomb, a tailor, when he was married in 1855.

Despite everything, I still can’t find any paper evidence that George Hercomb was the son of Thomas - besides his marriage certificate.  ???

There is a record of a George Hurcombe on FindMyPast 1851 British Army worldwide Index. I do not have access to view. A faint possibility?

Recently I have found two DNA matches via ThruLines who are descended from a Ralph Hercomb and a William Henry Fisher Hercomb respectively. My own research has confirmed that Ralph and William were the sons of Thomas Hercomb, a tailor of Uley in Gloucestershire.

So now I’m thinking perhaps my George Hercomb may have used another name, hence why I can’t find his baptism or census records prior to 1861.

The sons of Thomas Hercomb, tailor of Uley, and his wife Elizabeth Fisher were:

Henry 1805
Thomas 1807
Elijah 1808
William Henry Fisher 1813
Ralph 1817

Hi
I have Fisher and Hurcombe DNA from Uley. I have tested on Ancestry but exported my DNA data to Gedmatch and Myheritage. Gedmatch kit number MX2147275.
I wonder if we share some DNA?
