Title: Juliana Hinks - Little Girl Lost In Time
Post by: CorleyMiller on Tuesday 20 November 18 19:29 GMT (UK)
Hello,

This is one that has stumped me for a while, I’ve revisited it from time to time but without any success.

It concerns Juliana Hinks, born 31st March 1867, in Alton Ashover, Derbyshire to parents Stephen and Ann Hinks (nee Clay). Juliana was the eldest of 2 daughters, her younger sister Sarah Ann was born in Feb 1869.
Her baptismal record shows her as Juliana Eliza Hincks, although this middle name is not shown on her birth certificate.

In 1871, aged 4 she appears on the UK census as Julianna E Hinks, living with her paternal grandparents in Essington, Staffordshire. Her parents have separated, the father, a coal miner, has emigrated to Pennsylvania, USA, her mother is living with the Clay family in Wingfield, Derbyshire, younger sister Sarah doesn’t seem to appear anywhere on the 1871 census.

At that point Juliana disappears and I’ve not been able to trace any record of her subsequent existence on either UK or US census’, no marriage or death record, or on passenger lists.

Juliana’s mother Ann subsequently dies of smallpox, her father Stephen remains in the USA and has a new family there. Sarah reappears in 1881 living with the Clay family – I’ve traced Sarah’s descendants through to the 1950’s, but there is no sign of Juliana.

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Juliana would have been only 14 in 1881, though?

I think this one is the one baptised 1874 parents Philip Hinks and Julia Hanna Hinks (maiden name) Marriage was March 1/4 1874. So a Hinks married a Hinks which would explain the mmn Hinks on the birth reg. Not illegitimate.

Thank you for looking at this and for your replies.

A little clarification, Julia Hanna (b1855) is little Juliana's aunt. I suspect that Stephen named his eldest daughter after his youngest sister (and the Eliza part after one of his older sisters).
Julia Hanna was actually christened Juliana as well, its just got a bit distorted along the way, possibly her own choice given later instances of being recorded as Julia. I did wonder if little Juliana did the same sort of thing when she grew up - Julia/Julie/Eliza or even Anna.

Just as an aside, Philip and Julia Hanna is a case of first cousins marrying which is why they are both Hinks.

Hi,

It's been more than 5 years since I posted this query and I'm no further forward so i thought I'd bump it just in case anyone has access to newly available records that I haven't seen or have missed.

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Did you notice that Sarah Ann Hinks when she marries says she is 18 born 1867.

She was born 1869 and not baptised until December 1871

Rather out of area but..

In the Dublin Daily Express of 23 October 1888 is a piece where a Julia Ann Hinks is charged with assault along with John Fitzharris, labourer of 3 South Gloucester street, & Mary Fitzharris married woman same address
(Julia of same address too).

Modified to add…

Her criminal record on FindMyPast give a birth place of Townsend Street abt 1870 (I am assuming Dublin) so not her.  :)

Thanks for your replies.

amondg - I do recall seeing the discrepancy in Sarah Ann's stated birth date for the marriage, I suspect it was to make her appear older than the 16 she actually was, probably due to being pregnant at the time of the marriage.
As for the delayed baptism, I did wonder if they were waiting for her father to return from the US, which i don't think he ever did.
