My late mother was evacuated to Cumbria as I recall - somewhere near Newby Bridge and I would like to try and have her record opened.
Has anyone had a closed record opened without actually having the proper details of where they were staying at the time?

I think you do need to know the address. Find My Past says
"To request that a record be opened, go to their household on the Register, and click the 'Open a closed record'."

Thanks - I had read through what they want but can only provide limited details to them.
Oh well looks like I’ll be playing the waiting game...

Looks like it can be done, but there is a cost.
"Non-Findmypast.co.uk subscribers should use The National Archives Freedom of Information (FOI) request form to request a search of closed records from the 1939 Register. If the record can be opened, we will send you a full transcription of the information held in the record. The opened record will be available to view on Findmypast.co.uk ten working days after the notification of a successful request. Please note there is a fixed charge of £23.35 for this service."

"You need proof that the person is no longer living in order to submit your request to us. We can only accept a copy of an official death certificate (issued by the General Register Office or overseas equivalent) so please ensure you have this documentation before proceeding."
The mandatory details in the search form are name and date of birth. Address details are optional.

For FindMyPast my understand was you only need to provide a copy of the d/c for the individual and they will open the file. When the person turns 100 years + 1 day the file shouldautomatically be opened.

True, but according to their site you need the address where the person was, so if you don’t know that you’re stuck.

I just might email FindMyPast as I have a current sub with them.
All the records must be already open to FindMyPast for them to say they are continually opening the closed records that they have cross referenced with the death records otherwise it would take them forever...
She’s the only person born in 1929 with her given name and surname - so in my head they wouldn’t be looking for a needle in a haystack... ;D

That's my feeling about this also.
I think they hold a 'master' copy of the '39 Register. FindMyPast scanned and transcribed this dataset initially. If you're able to supply the full name as it was in 1939, and full date of birth plus married name (as a backup/ bit of verification) and her d/c. I would have thought this should be sufficient for them verify her and her death and then to open up her record for you to then search for her in the database. Perhaps that too simple :-X
