Title: Shropshire Parish registers
Post by: BronwenS on Wednesday 21 November 18 01:52 GMT (UK)
Kia ora

I have been looking through these to check up on some things.  I wanted to find the ones that were in High Ercall - see below - but I cannot find which book they are in, any ideas.

According to Shropshire Archives, the parish registers for High Ercall are available on FindMyPast.

Christenings/Baptisms 1576-1900
Marriages 1585-1900
Banns 1754-1837
Burials 1585-1900

May also be available on FamilySearch.

Incidentally, William Colley (1891) and Gulielmus are one and the same person ;D
The Latin form of William is Gulielmus.

Thanks for that I can't go on Find my past.  But they are all freely available on line here for anyone.
https://archive.org/search.php?query=shropshire%20parish%20records

But I cannot find the High Ercall ones I thought they perhaps they came under another parish which I might not know of.

Many thanks for the William name too.

What you are looking at are the transcripts written by the Shropshire Parish Records Society.
These are available here: http://www.melocki.org.uk/MelockiSalop.html

But High Ercall isn't among them.

So, you have 3 sources:
1. Shropshire Archives; and pay for a researcher
2. FindMyPast; Not sure I understand why you can't go there?
3. FamilySearch.org; you have to register, but it's free to use the Search facility.

Okay thanks.

I don't at this point want to pay but will in the future when I have gathered as much as information as I can.

They are much easier to search on the Shropshire Parish records you put in a name and it tells you what pages that surname is in, very quick.  I think Melocki which I am aware of and have looked at before is not easy to search.

To find any real detail on find my past you have to subscribe - I already have a subscription to another site for a year.

Yes I do use family search.

Unfortunately the records in the link you gave do not include High Ercall/Ercall Magna records. These records were from  booklets produced by Shropshire FHS many years ago and have subsequently been used by the Melocki site. Thus, neither have the records for that parish.

Family search does have the records. See:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=20670&query=%2Bplace%3A%22England%2C%20Shropshire%2C%20Ercall-Magna%22

Also, as Kevin has said, FindMyPast does have the records.  I think you can purchase a monthly sub; making sure you cancel before the month is up.

Hi Gadget

I have had a look at the Family search information and I can't understand how it works.  I don't seem to be able to get a printout other than the name of the document I am wanting to see.... e.g.
Bishop's transcripts for Ercall-Magna, 1631-1861
Author:   Church of England. Parish Church of Ercall-Magna (Shropshire)

If I add this to the print list I get the heading and it suggests they are only available on Microfiche or film, does that mean I would then need to order them.  Somewhere it said to look at world cat.

Can you help please.

That was just a catalogue entry, Bronwen. What I was saying was that the records are listed in Family Search, you just search the  FS records in the normal way.  For example, I put one of the records that you listed in and got:

If you want to get to High Ercall directly, you need to put in the 'Batch Number'

The one for baptisms is P008961

What you need to do is use the left handcolumn and scroll down to the bottom section. Click on the 'Batch Number' choice and a choice will come up. Fill in the batch number and you'll restrict your results to that batch.

Haven't used that Archer site for searching but it's quite good, once you've found the listing with the correct number, just click on it and a new window appears. You can then just enter a surname and it will list all with that surname for that batch  :)

For example, I clicked on the marriage number for High Ercall and this screen comes up:

Remember to make sure that you are logged in to Family Search before you use the Archer site for accessing the records  :)

Looking at your initial post, Bronwen, I do not think the Richard Colley you have identified as born in Bridgnorth can be correct. Shropshire is a large county and Bridgnorth is some distance from High Ercall.

Much more likely is Richardus Colly baptised in 1686/1688(year  depends on source) in High Ercall. When searching for this surname do look for variations like Coley or Colly.

Do remember that while without a sub you cannot view the images you can still do a free search on FindMyPast. This is easy to do  and a good way of pointing you in the right direction. This includes records from Familysearch and Shropshire parish records

I would also suggest that you look at wills on  FindMyPast. There is a will for a George Colley in High Ercall in 1682 who could be connected. There is an admin for your George Colley who died 1702. (It is showing as George Colley, Ercall Magna. Ercall Magna is another name for the parish.High Ercall is the largest village in the parish. Isombridge is a tiny hamlet in the parish).

Many many thanks to both of you for all your help.  I have used Family search lots of times but not in this particular way.  I have seen things in there that are wrong so i was a bit nervous about that.

I will spend much of today (lousy weather here) playing around with this and trying to ascertain the correct people.
