This is from 1758 "Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records" and reads "David (struck through) Brown of (Need help here) & Abigail of Sudbury were married..." and I'm trying to figure out where David Brown came from. Looks kind of like "Portland"?
-
Yes, I read it as Portland.

Or could be Rutland?

My first thought was Rutland and closer examination hasn't changed that.
Two forms of r are used in the clip. One is seen in Brown, Were and married.
The other can be seen most clearly in Sudbury.
Neither matches the supposed r of Portland. This letter is clearly a u.
The tiny circle is something else, in my opinion - part of a flourish.
Can you find another R in the document & post a clip? It would be good to see another example.
-
Rutland was my first reading too. And my second! ;)
Wiggy.

Looks like Rutland to me.
-
Rutland, MA is about 35 miles from Sudbury. Seems very feasible.
-
What's the name below that's partially cut off? It looks similar to the first letter.
I am going with Rutland as well, but would like to see more of the writing to confirm.

I would say Rice or Price.
I also vote for Rutland.

Multiple examples of his capital R, formed like a P with a detached tongue making the R - Rice (twice), Read, Rebekah, Ruth, Robbins etc etc.
Another clear example of Rutland in the Ephraim Splodge and Dorothy Brintnal marriage above.
-
That solves it, horselydown86! Rutland it is.

Rutland has come up in other family history, so that would make sense. Thanks everyone!
