Title: Charles Hayward b Q1 1867 Cranbrook or Benenden
Post by: Cockneyrebel on Thursday 22 November 18 14:59 GMT (UK)
The above was the son of Jabez Hayward 1832-1877 and Lavinia Matilda nee Filmer 1833-1871. At 1871 he lived at 4 Sissinghurst St, Cranbrook, with his widowed father and Hayward grandparents; 1881 sees him living with his father and stepmother as farmer's son at Collins Place, Cranbrook with 3 siblings.
After 1881 matters get complicated as there seems to be another person with the same name? It would be helpful to distinguish whether he married and his passing?

The other person with the same name definitely isn't him?  I mean do they both appear separately at one time or another?

This is the problem Millipede, there is one on the 1901 (who is married to Ellen) b Frittenden, Private in army but by 1911 he is a Farm Labourer. As he was the son of Jabez who was a farmer of 113 acres, I would've thought he'd be a farmer too especially as he was the eldest and only son?

This one (states born Cranbrook) married to Ellen is not your man - army service record shows he was the son of George Hayward (Frittenden) and Harriett with various siblings that do not match those of your man.   He was discharged 31/5/1903 and described then as a Labourer.

Jabez Hayward, farmer, was first married to Lavinia Matilda Filmer Mar.1859 Rye, Sussex.

Children:
Lavinia Matilda b.1861 Rolvenden
Loanna (Joanna?) Julia b.1862 Rolvenden
Edith Eliza b.1863 Benenden
Charles William b.1865 Benenden
Victoria Lavinia b.1871 Bendenden

Looking at census girls seem to be known by their second names.

So your Charles was actually a Charles William - he is single, a farmer, shown as born Rolvenden, on 1891 census.   I can't seem to find him after then.

Perhaps the Charles William b.1865 died Dec.1898 Maidstone?

Annette, I believe that you've answered correctly. I've just been through the new GRO  indices and found that Charles was actually Charles William b q2 1865 not 1867 and looks like a marriage for him in London 25 Jul 1898.
Thank you very much for clarifying this for me.

Unfortunately Charles Wm passed away in Nov 1898 so Sarah Jane nee Lovell was a widow after only 4 months married and shown at 1901 at Sissinghurst living with a cousin.
