Title: Walter Scott
Post by: Hannahville on Sunday 25 November 18 23:06 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find information on Walter Scott born Dumfries 1816 and apparently went to work in Manchester before returning to Dumfries to build a tweed factory in 1857. I think that he might have worked for, or with family members, in textiles but have no evidence. His father Robert Scott born 1780 also went to Manchester and returned to Dumfries to set up a hosiery business in 1810. likewise I have no information on his missing years . Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What documentation implies or infers that these events occurred?

There is a Dumfries-born Walter Scott in Broughton, Salford in 1851, but he is aged 30 so a bit younger than you thought.

He’s a master hosier and shirtmaker employing 50 women, 5 men and 3 boys.

Wife is Betsey, 26 b Manchester - possibly married as Betsy Walker to Walter Scott, Dec qtr 1845 Ormskirk.

Children, all born Manchester:

Walter H, 4* (Walter Henry Scott, mother’s maiden name Walker, Jun qtr 1848 Salford - bapt 6 Apr 1848)
Charles W, 3* (Charles Walker Scott, mmn Walker, Mar qtr 1847 Salford - baptised 5 Feb 1847)
Fanny, 1.5 yrs (Fanny Scott, mmn Walker, Dec qtr 1849 Salford - born 5 Nov 1849; bapt 6 Dec 1849)
(Unnamed daughter) 4 days (Mary Scott, mmn Walker, Jun qtr 1851 Salford - b 25 Mar & bapt 16 May 1851)

*The boys’ ages appear to be transposed.

The family had four live-in servants.

Robert Scott was born in Dumfries but when he got married in Dumfries in 1804 the papers referred to him and his future wife as coming from Manchester. Walter Scott was born in Dumfries but when he came to the town in 1857 again he was referred as coming from Manchester.

The information on Walter Scott and family is most helpful.  He died in 1899 aged 79 which suggests that the date of birth of 1816 is incorrect and bears out the other facts. I had some problem with his wife but this was resolved when I found out that his first wife had died and he remarried in 1863. Many thanks for this useful information
