Hi Everyone, I wonder if you can help me.
I am looking for...
Birth certificates for Henry, Margaret, John Thomas and Joshua.
Marriage certificates for Henry and Margaret.
Henry Grainger/Granger married to Margaret Granger. Both born before 1828. They were born in England as they had a son Joshua born in Leeds, UK and another son John Thomas Granger born in Durban, South Africa, where the whole family settled. (Henry has signed his son’s marriage certificate as Grainger but his family are all Grangers)
I have searched on quite a few websites but have decided to post on forums for a bit more help.

I don’t know when Henry and Margaret were married but can only assume it was before the birth of their 1st child Joshua in 1846 and assume it’s in the UK as he was born in Leeds.
Joshua Granger
- Joshua born 1846 to Aug 1894
- Married Margaret Granger (Burns), born 1849, Isle Of Wight, UK, Died 21 Jul 1914 in Durban (found marriage certificate)
- Had 7 children (we have found all their baptism records)
- buried in Wesleyan Burial Ground in Durban
John Thomas Granger
- Born October 1850 in Durban and Died 10 September 1930 at 79 years and 11 months
- Married 30 April 1875 at 24 years old (found marriage certificate)
- Married Lydia Granger (Cheetham), Born 1846, Died 25 June 1946 at 95 years and 10 months, Died in Durban, South Africa
- Had 7 children (can’t find any baptism/birth records)
- Buried at St Emmanuel Catholic Cathedral Durban

I can’t see a marriage on FreeBMD for a Henry to a Margaret.
The child could have been born out of wedlock and be registered under mother’s name.
Do you not have death certs for Henry and Margaret?

Where did Joshua's birthplace of Leeds come from?

Was his birth year 1846 or 1848? Both dates are mentioned.

For anyone trying to help the estate files give John Thomas Grangers birth as c1851.
He died 10 September 1930 age 79 years 11 months

One of Joshua Granger’s childrens baptism certificate says Joshua was born in Leeds.

Joshua had a wife called Margaret Granger (nee Burns).
- Margaret born 1849
- Born Isle Of Wight, UK
- Died 21 Jul 1914 in Durban
I have their marriage certificate saying they were married in Durban. But both born in the UK. So thats the link to finding his parents, Henry and Margaret, who are from the UK.

Without the links, we cannot see the records.
Looking at the death notice of 1911, he was aged 66y, but the marriage was dated 1861, which doesn't tally with the one that you presented.

Sorry, I meant the links as we like to know all the information from this type of document as there are sometimes clues that may have been missed.

You won't get birth certificates for anyone born in the UK prior to mid 1837.
The GRO index and freebmd are the places to search for records after this time. Not all births were registered in the early years

I can't see a marriage for a Henry Granger to a Margaret before 1846

I agree with everything Rosie has found so far.
We can eliminate;
Joshua Grainger/Granger;
1844 one is still in England 1881 Census (Parents John/Mary nee Bark)
Same with 1845 one (Parents John/Susan) he married 1872 in England.
You can also count out the Staffs one, parents Daniel/Maria.

Closest Baptism I can find;
10 Jul 1853, Durban, Natal, South Africa
ANN Granger, Parents JOHN/SARAH
I can find 1 child to them Florence Isabella Watson 1872 (George was a Builder)
Cant find a Burial for Ann Watson to see if there is extra info on her Parents.

May be a long shot but F/S has a Burial for a John Granger;
28 Oct 1899, Albany, Cape Province, South Africa
Age 70, born/married England
Informant Son William Granger
Johns occp seems to be Gun Maker

Both John Thomas’ and Joshua’s marriages show ‘consent given by parents’ but parents not named.
J T’s shows Henry Grainger and Margaret Grainger under the witness names.
Could that Margaret be Joshua’s wife?
Do you have documentation which shows the parents are Henry and Margaret?
