Title: Improving snipped press cuttings
Post by: ainslie on Wednesday 28 November 18 21:03 GMT (UK)
I have a series of brief extracts from newspapers, taken by snipping tool from online newspaper sources, then copied and pasted into Word documents.
In this process they seem to acquire a tinted appearance, making them harder to read.
Is there any way of enhancing these images, or reducing the tint background?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Ainslie

Have you tried inverting the snip in Paint before you you copy and paste to word....or, download the free photo editing software called Gimp and convert to black and white. Alternatively....post it on the photo board  ;)

GIMP, as suggested, which is free incidentally, or something similar, would allow you to adjust the contrast and or brightness using a simple slider control and it will make a big difference. I use Irfan View, again free, which is a wonderful tool for doing all sorts of clever things to images.

I do the same sort of thing, snipping images, but I've never experienced this sort of problem. The snipped image ends up exactly like it looks on the screen.  I'm puzzled as to why you have this problem. The image should look exactly like it does before you snip.

It might help if you tried snipping a section of this Rootschat thread and uploading your snipped image so that other people can see what it looks like.

Or you could just use the Format Picture in Word, it has contrast, brightness, presets and a few other bits.

Thank you all for your interest.  I am working my way through your comments and for now am attaching one example of the discoloured, snipped cutting.

Ainslie, I think that is the right colour.  I don't think it is discoloured.  Perhaps old newspapers were not bleached like they are today.  Is that how it also looks before you snipped it?

Yes the pages are aged...Here is my adjustment for you. There will always be a little shadowing showing through from the previous page, to eliminate it weakens the black text.

Thanks again.  The snip I posted looks better here than on my screen where it has a bluish tinge
Carol, can you say how you got to that b/W Version?  That would be ideal if I could use it on the other cuttings I have.
I do have Gimp but not much idea of using it.
Ainslie.

I did it in Photoshop Ainslie, I haven't used Gimp but you could look on the internet for instructions.

When I snip newspaper cuttings, photos etc. I just save from the resulting snip direct to whichever relevant file I want the clip, I rarely post to Word documents first.  I use Windows Snipping Tool.

If you download the whole page of the newspaper, it sometimes turns blue, if you click on the page it goes back to it's natural colour...if you snip just from the preview it saves the colour as it is. I'm sure if you highlight the text in word, you can change the background colour.

I managed to produce something very similar to Carol's with FastStone Image Viewer - despite its name, it's also an editor, and it's free for home users. I find it very quick and easy.

The process was:
(a) convert to grayscale
(b) use Levels tool

Instead of (b), you can get a similar effect with a different tool ('Adjust Colors') which has sliders for adjusting Brightness, Contrast and Gamma.

As you have Word, then have you got Microsoft Office Picture Manager? If so you can change to Black and White by:
Select the picture you want to work with, and then on the Formatting toolbar click Edit Pictures.
In the Edit Pictures task pane under Edit using these tools, click Color. Type -100  in the Saturation settings text box or move the slider all the way to the left.

It's simple in Word, no need to use anything else. I just used a Recolor preset

I put it in twice to show the difference

Just in case you have a Mac instead of a PC:
Open it in Preview, go to Tools>Adjust Colour, then play around with the various sliders until you're happy with it.

I had to stop my trials of the varied advice you have given as we had an unexpected guest for the weekend, but will be resuming today.

Japeflakes, your trials look good.  What was your method please?
Peter McG, I do not have a Mac, just laptop with W10 etc, but thanks anyway.
