Title: Wife of William Henry Thompson 1878-1940 Wallsend area
Post by: Lisa8thompson on Thursday 29 November 18 08:41 GMT (UK)
Hi, looking for conformation on my great grandfathers wife as there’s confusion on her surname...

Great grandfather William Henry Thompson born 1878 in Byker died 1940 in Wallsend

We are unsure if his wife was an Elizabeth Irwin or Elizabeth Spraggon.. on 1901 census she is just down as Elizabeth Thompson born in walker aged 23.

Children:
William Henry
Spraggon Irwin
Joseph
Sarah Jane
Elizabeth
Margaret
Florence
And a possible Peter..

Some of the children’s births have mmn as Irwin.

The confusing part is there is a child called Spraggon Irwin Thompson.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Lisa

Something amiss here.Lets say he marries at 18,so after 1896 then by 1901 he has eight children.Other option is that he married one Elizabeth who died and a second Elizabeth is added.

He only has one child in 1901 - William, aged 1. His mother's maiden name is Irwin.

William Thompson married Elizabeth Irwin in 1st q. 1899, Tynemouth 10b, 357.

I don't understand why that's confusing?

Spraggon Irwin Thompson born 2nd q. 1902, Tynemouth, mother's maiden name Irwin  :-\

The names William Henry Thompson and Elizabeth Irwin are on the same page of marriage register, Tynemouth, March Q 1899.

William Henry Thompson,  Sept Q 1899, Tynemouth. Mmn Irwin.

You say "some" of children have mmn Irwin. What do the others have?

How does the name Spraggon fit In?

Sorry, I think it’s the way I wrote that, yes they only had William Henry aged 1 on the 1901 census

On the 1911 census they have 5 children

William Henry aged 11
Spraggon Irwin aged 9
Joseph aged 6
Sarah aged 3
Elizabeth aged 6 month

On 1939 census there is Florence who would be aged 21
William Henry (son) and Spraggon Irwin are not shown on this one.

The confusion is with the surnames of the wife.. then a child with both possibilities as their name...

How does the name Spraggon fit In?

I think the Elizabeth Irwin who married William could well be the daughter of a Spraggon Irwin.

The 1811 1881 census has a Spraggon Irwin and family living in Walker. Among his children is a 3 year old Elizabeth Irwin, born Walker. RG 11 / 5085 / 70 / 27

William's wife's maiden name was Irwin as indicated by the birth registrations of Wiliam and Spraggon.

But would this not make her too old as going of census with William she was born approx 1877?

The census I quoted should, of course, read 1881  :-[

As far as I can see all of the children you've mentioned have mothers maiden name Irwin.

Yes, I’ve now found Florence birth record which states Irwin.

All looks good.

When you follow Spraggon back on Census I think you will find this is his Parents Marriage;
11 Nov 1827, St Andrew, Hexham
Jane SPRAGGON
George IRWIN

The church code on the Elizabeth Irwin marriage in 1899 indicates marriage took place at a non-Anglican venue.  Perhaps this might have been at a registry office or an RC Church/Methodist etc.
