Title: Daviot and Dunlichity
Post by: heilanlassie on Thursday 29 November 18 10:33 GMT (UK)
Would anyone be able to help me identify the name of the farm where Finlay McGillivray is living in 1851?
Also, I have found a decree for aliment dated May 1856, for an Alexander McGillivray (who is living with his father, Finlay) who is being pursued by my 2xgreat-grandmother, Marjory/Mary Grant, for an illegitimate child - but in this decree, Marjory/Mary Grant's address is stated to be Elrig of Strathnairn, whereas in all the other documentation I have for Marjory/Mary, her address is stated to be Elrig, Daviot and Dunlichity.
Could Elrig of Strathnairn and Elrig, Daviot and Dunlichity be the same place? I do hope so, because ir means that I have found some more information relating to my family.

Probably not correct but the word brings to mind an episode of WDYTYA with Annie Lennox and a place called Tomantoul?

On the decree for aliment, Alexander's address looks like " Tomtoil of Strathnairn "

Suggest you have a look at NLS maps. There is liitle doubt in my mind that Elrig, Strathnairn and Elrig, Daviot and Dunlichty are one and the same.( I am looking at a 6 inch map showing Tomintoul and Elrig in the valley of the River Nairn - sheet XXXI published 1874).

You might also find it useful to look at the 1851 census on Freecen - Finlay McGillivray  and family are showing at Tomantoul. Nearby places include Brinmore, Mill of Brin and Achneem. Freecen affords you the ability to scroll through the census - there seem to be a fair number of McGillivrays in the area.

Scotlands Places and its OS name books are also well worth a look.
