Title: Looking for Joseph callett
Post by: pamissearching!!! on Monday 03 December 18 12:32 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help I have a family by name of Miller living in Smith Street Lambeth in 1841. Caroline Miller aged 70ish is the step !other of the girls but there is a young boy named Joseph calett aged 10 living with them. Caroline is deceased by 1851but I would like to find Joseph as he may be a grandson of Caroline by a first marriage. I would also like to find the marriage of Caroline to William Henry Miller which would have taken place between 1838/1841 in the Lambeth area. I don't know Caroline's surname pre marriage to William. Many thanks

Joseph does not have a place of birth (Y/N) on the 1841.

I see Caroline was of 'Independent' means - did she leave a will.

I don't know if Caroline left a will. I don't think her husband left a will. He was a Potter. Caroline may have been well off from 1st marriage maybe. The Miller girls ran a laundry corner Smith Street and Henry place. The daughter Mary was still running it with her husband Napoleon James bolt untill his death 1870s

When did Williams first wife die, what was her name.  When did William die.

Williams first wife was Sarah Gore. She died after 1837.william was deceased by 1841 I think. They wouldn't have been married long

Are you sure that Caroline was married to him and not a sister or other relation

You really need to establish exactly where & when Sarah nee Gore died, also William Henry Miller

Would have been a late marriage for Caroline if she was 70ish in 1841 and married 1838/1841.

The 1841 census can be somewhat ambiguous.  There is a tick for Joseph in the end column for born Scotland Ireland Foreign parts.

Baptism of Mary Miller 3 May 1839 says Sarah dec'd.

Sarah Frances Miller death in Lambeth Mar 1839 age 22.

Seems a bit unlikely for man to lose his 22 yr old wife and then rapidly marry a 70 yr old?

Perhaps Caroline was William’s mother, and her late husband was also a William Henry Miller?

Oh hang on.

Sarah who died aged 22 in 1839 can’t be the mother of Mary “said to be born 1 Septr 1822” according to her 1839 baptism.

Why is it thought Sarah Miller nee Gore died after 1837?

William was baptized 1780.parents were William and Mary. I don't think Sarah had a middle name. On Matilda's death cert she thought her elder sister Louisa was her mother as Sarah died so early.

Who is Matilda?  You previously said at reply #4 that Sarah died after 1837 ???

I see that William and Mary also had a son Elisha Ganvey Miller (1788 Lambeth) who may be the Elisha Miller who witnessed Louisa Sophia’s marriage in 1850.

death certificate for Caroline says she died 19th July 1845 at Smith street /Henry Place aged 81 years. Widow of William Miller [potter].
informant was Louisa Miller, present at death. Smith street.
William married Sarah Gore 4/5/1803 at Newington Surrey. She was born 20/11/1784. parents were William Gore /Mary Smith. William was the son of William Miller and Mary Bramblee. I have made an error with the death for Sarah. The birth of her last child was 1826[not baptism year of 1839] so shee died around 1826 . Elisha Miller was the Brother of William. He was witness to all Williams children marriages [Except I cannot find William Alfred who was born 1803] The family stayed close to Elisha. There was a sister Mary 1778 and also a brother Samuel 1784 who I cannot find.

the children of William Henry Miller and Sarah Gore were William Alfred Miller 1803, John James 1804, Louisa Sophia 1806. Mary 1822 and Matilda 1826 [Long space between]

Are you sure about John James 1804?  I can see such a person baptised 29 July 1804 at St Mary, Lambeth, but his parents are John & Eleanor.

,john James, has caused me a lot of grief as well! It maybe a missprińt in the baptism records as in all census were I can find him(including ones where he has Marys children with him, listing himself as their uncle)he is written down as john Joseph and is consistently john Joseph till his death ;D. Mary married Napoleon James bolt

The 1841 census can be somewhat ambiguous.  There is a tick for Joseph in the end column for born Scotland Ireland Foreign parts.

Looking at adjacent pages it looks as though the enumerator was just using the Scotland/Ireland column to tick any people who were not born in Surrey, so he could have been born anywhere.   :(

Thank you. I don't have the end column of the census for some reason. A futile chase I am beginning to think >:(

Perhaps it should read Joseph Collett.
Doesn't seem to be a Joseph Callett around, plenty of Collett activity in Lambeth.
