Title: MOUNTAIN in Boston
Post by: dbrobertson on Tuesday 04 December 18 00:09 GMT (UK)
We have traced my wife's ancestors back to one John Mountain of Boston who married 1) Ann Newbell in London, 1793 and 2) Martha Mowbray in Boston 15 May 1823. The first union produced at least 4 children; the second at least 12.

What we don't know are details about John - his dates, his parents, sibs, etc.

In-law lines other than Mowbray include Physick, Groom(e) & Tomlinson.

Anyone researching MOUNTAIN in Boston/Lincolnshire?

Brian

I think you may have got the John Mountains a little mixed
John Mountain who married Martha Mowbray in 1823 was born c.1800 so would not be the John Mountain who married in 1793

However John Mountain who married  Martha is very possibly the son of John who married Ann.
But John who married Ann in 1823 was a widower on marriage

I'll post a few details
Marriage Parish records
Spitalfields Christchurch Stepney
John Mountain widower of this Parish and Ann Newbell ofthe same were married by licence on 26 May 1793 by Samuel Henshall
witnesses Joseph Newbell & Robert newbell

it seems they had a son
Baptism Spitalfields
John Mountain of John , Mariner, Quaker St, by Ann
born 30 April 1799
baptism 28 Jun 1799

or is this his baptism John Fountain 27 may 1799 Boston parents John & Ann????

so was this son the John Mountain who married Martha Mowbray in 1823 Fishtoft Boston Lincs
1841 census is so faint John's occupation or yes or no to p.o.b. cannot be read.
(1841 census rounds ages of adults 15+ years down to the nearest 5 years and just states yes or no in answer to the question "were you born in the county you are living in?" which in 1841 was Lincolnshire

Hi Suz,

I have a clearer image of the 1841 census which states John Mountain, publican, born in county, the address is Angel Inn ? Place, Martha and all the children listed in the household were also born in county.

The is a death record in The Stamford Mercury 6th June 1823 which states - On Saturday Last, age 65, John Mountain, landlord of the Angel Inn, Boston.

Pigot's Directory for 1835 has John Mountain at the the Angel, Market Place.

Presumably, John took over from his father at The Angel.

The nearest baptism for John Snr's birth is at Huttoft on 25th October 1759, son of Joseph and Elizabeth.

Joseph Mountain married Elizabeth Simson in Huttoft on 28th May 1753.

Other children - William 1756, William 1757 and Joseph 1761.

Re my previous post, John Mountain of Huttoft probably married Ruth Nettlam in 1784.

There is an article stating that she left him in 1800 and he died in Huttoft in 1805, so not the father of John of Boston.

The earliest record I can find of John at The Angel is 19th February 1810. Someone stole a silver pint mug with an angle engraved on it. A reward of five guineas would be paid by the Skirbeck and Boston Association for the Prosecutions of Felons and a further five by John Mountain on conviction of the felon.

John Mountain probably married Anne Ratcliffe Shephard in Boston on 1 May 1821. She was probably buried on 27th September 1821, age 20, which matches a baptism of 30th July 1801 in Boston

Stamford Mercury - 19th October 1849

On Wednesday evening last, Mr. John Mountain, landlord of Angel Inn, Market-place, Boston, was found hanging, quite dead, one of the upper rooms of the inn. He is supposed to have committed suicide some time during the afternoon, having been missing shortly after dinner time. Mr. M. was owner of several vessels out of the port, and a man well respected.

Stamford Mercury 26th October 1849

The inquest stated that he had been of low spirits but in easy circumstances. Verdict of temporary derangement. Left a wife and 13 children.

Thanks to all for the lovely information. :)

My wife has long questioned that the same John married both Ann Newbell and Martha Mowbray. She has wondered for years if there were two 'Johns', father and son. She can now tell her cousins that she was right about the conflation.

My list of children born to John & Martha from 1824 to 1848 is almost identical to the list Suz found on the 1851 census (but obtained via snailmail 30 years ago). Only difference is that I'm missing James.

Tentatively it appears that John Sr. lived from 1759 to 1823 (expiring two weeks after John Jr. marries Martha Mowbray). I have John Jr. baptized 27 May 1799, confirmed by Suz, who found the registration under John 'Fountain' and dying by his own hand in October of 1849 as discovered by David.

I think we have John Jr.'s first marriage (to Anne Ratcliffe Shephard) and perhaps John Sr.'s parents.

With all the rest I think I'll just sort through stuff for a day or two because there is a lot to take in.

Again, thanks!

Brian

I think we have it sorted out (for now).

The John Mountain who married Ruth Nettlam in 1784 appears to be an outlier as do Charles Mountain born circa 1776 & Susanna/Susan who married John Maddieson. I'll keep this info on file for future reference. My late father-in-law believed all or most all of the Mountains of Lincolnshire came from one family in Norman times.

The information about the Angel Inn had been lost; the pre-internet data I had received noted that John (both Jr & Sr as it turns out) was a 'sea captain' and 'ship owner' but never publican. Nor was anyone aware of the suicide.

Partly based upon the appearance of the name "Joseph" in the next generations, I'm fairly confident that John Sr.'s parents are Joseph Mountain & Elizabeth Simson married 28 May 1753. John's baptism is 25 Oct 1759.

The first wife of John Mountain Sr. is still unknown, although Anne Shephard was discovered to be John Jr.'s first wife.

Based upon naming patterns Joseph's father might be "William".

These folks were a lot more affluent than I would have expected - offering a reward of 5 guineas two centuries ago - that was serious money at the time.
