Hi, I’m trying to Source info on my 4th great grandparents
I can’t find anything but I have details of their children and one of their marriage certificatye that state father as James Alderson

Charles Alderson born 1809 Hellgill Westmorland
George Alderson born 1816 Mallerstang Westmorland
Jane Alderson born 1819 Richmond North Yorkshire

It is James’s marriage certificate to Frances Walton in 1847 southchurch Durham that it states his father is also James Alderson a miner
Jane possibly moved to Canada.
I hope this info is correct and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Several possible births for James Alderson in Westmorland and elsewhere.
The following might be a possibility, he is in some trees on A….y but no one has found any details?
James Alderson Baptism 15 Apr 1772 Brough Under Stainmore,Westmorland.
Parents John & Elizabeth.
There is also a GRO death record James Alderson Jul 1838 East Ward, Westmorland
The only baptism I can find near to the name of Mellison/Millison below.

Hi Lisa :)
If I have the right family Frances is a widow in 1851, living at Peases Row, West Auckland. HO 107 / 2385/361 / 31. With her are several children, two of whom James and Elizabeth appear to be at South Church, St Andrew Auckland in 1841 with a James and Mary Alderson (HO 107 / 307 / 1/ 15 / 25) Mary appears to have died in 1846 (per Durham Records Online).
In 1841 James' birth place is simply given as 'N' i.e. not born in County Durham.
I wondered how you had tied this James to the one born in Mallerstang?
-
I’m starting to think I need to re look at the westmorland connections as i have later family in 1900 in Auckland Durham..
I think one connection of a birth I’ve made has sent me down the wrong path :'(
Apologies, think I need to do some reconnections.

From the beginning:
Grandmother:
Eliza Jane Alderson 1907-1968 Wallsend
Married Joseph Thompson 1930 in Tynemouth
Great grandparents:
George Alderson 1881-1921 County Durham
Married Catherine Martin 1904 in Tynemouth
Children:
Thomas Marson Alderson
George Alderson
Mary B M Alderson
William Braton Martin Alderson
Catherine Gregg Alderson
David waters Alderson
Alexander Martin Alderson
Great Great Grandparents:
Thomas Alderson 1849-1912 Durham
Married Margaret Armstrong 1872 Auckland Durham
Children:
Thomas Alderson
Margaret Jane Alderson
George Alderson
Robert Alderson
Frances Isabella Alderson
James Alderson
Mary Alderson
John Armstrong Alderson
Later than this I have deleted as it seemed to go wrong...
I think JenB has provided a more realistic connection.

May I ask why you think James Alderson, Father of Thomas 1849 South Broom had a Westmorland connection?
I presume this is Thomas;
ALDERSON, THOMAS, Mothers mn RICHARDSON
GRO Reference: 1848 M Quarter in AUCKLAND UNION Volume 24 Page 13
Frances Jane I presume was widowed when she married 1847, previous Marriage 1843 to John WALTON .
So James Alderson had died by 1851 Census so we have no pob for him.
His Death Reg
ALDERSON, JAMES age 46***
GRO Reference: 1850 M Quarter in AUCKLAND UNION Volume 24 Page 4
1841 we have in South Church Durham;
James Alderson, 35, Pitman
Mary, 35
Mary, 14
Hannah, 11
Rachael, 8
James, 5
Elizabeth, 10 mths
All not born in County except for last 3 children.
-
Lisa, is this 'your' Thomas in 1881?
RG 11 / 4956 / 111 / 3
6, No. 2 Cottages, Kimblesworth Colliery
Thomas Alderson, head, mar, 32, coal miner, Durham South Church,
Margaret do, wife, mar, 23, coal miners w., do, Swalwell
Thomas do, son, 4, do Witton Gilbert
Margaret do, daur, 2, Do Wheatley Hill
-
So in 1851 we have;
Frances J Alderson 37
James Alderson 15
John Richardson 14
Elizabeth Alderson 11******
John Alderson 7
THOMAS Alderson 2***
Elizabeth Richardson 81
This looks to be Elizabeth Birth Reg;
ALDERSON, ELIZABETH, Mothers mn EMMERSON****
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in AUCKLAND UNION Volume 24 Page 8
1861 Elizabeth is a Sister in Law to Anthony PROTT (Pratt)
Anthony Prott 35
Mary A Prott 34
Elas Prott 11
Elizabeth Prott 7
John Prott 5
Mary Prott 2
Elizabeth Alderson 20 born South Church, Durham***
Mary Ann ALDERSON married Anthony PRATT 3 May 1847 Durham
I think that is the Mary Ann age 14 in 1841 Census I posted.
1851 Mary Ann Pratt is born Reeth, Yorkshire****
And on other Census always in Yorkshire
-
Just for the record Frances Jane Alderson died in 1852, burial at Auckland, residence South Church aged 38.
-
James ALDERSON/Mary EMERSON married 31 Jan 1826 Grinton, Yorkshire.
Ok I can see the christening on F/S that has been taken by Trees in Westmorland for James but there is also this one in Yorkshire;
22 July 1804 Thornhill by Dewsbury, Yorkshire, JAMES, Son of JAMES Alderson
So I am a bit sceptical of the Westmorland one being your James but others may disagree!
-

Yes this is the Info I have for Thomas :)

Sorry Lisa, but at the moment I agree with Trish. I can't see any firm evidence for a Westmorland connection. The only thing we can say on the evidence of the one census on which James appears is that he wasn't born in County Durham!
-
More sceptical now ::)
1861 Census we have;
James ALDERSON born c 1805 Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland***, living in West Auckland, Durham.
Wife Dorothy and Family with him
He married Dorothy DIXON 11 Jun 1836 Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.
1841 in Kirkjy Stephen we have;
James Alderson 30
Dorothy Alderson 30
Ann Alderson 4
James Alderson 2
1851 Census in Durham we have
James Alderson 44 born Westmorland**
Dorothy Alderson 41
An Dawson Alderson 13
William Alderson 9
John Alderson 1
Garry McDonel 20
Michael Sollers 38
William Pray 35

James ALDERSON/Mary EMERSON married 31 Jan 1826 Grinton, Yorkshire.

I think this is where I’ve went wrong with the westmorland connection.
All the other info you have provided fits perfect. I will have a look into the Yorkshire christening and see how that pans out!!
Thanks to everyone’s help on this I think I am going on the right track now! X

We need to be a bit careful here, as Alderson is a fairly common surname inYorkshire. There is also a James Alderson baptised in Grinton in 1802.
Lisa, please do remember that ages were usually rounded down to the nearest five year in the 1841 census. So while James's age is entered as 35 it could actually have been anything between 35 and 39!

I totally agree, I think when I’m matched the wrong christening details up I’ve looked into the wrong line hence what I was struggling. Thanks for your help on this.

As I said in my earlier reply there were lots of Aldersons in Yorkshire, including one baptised in Grinton, which, it seems, is where James married Mary Emmerson. You need to do a lot more research before 'deciding' on another James!

Instructions to enumerators in 1841

Of course, yes I understand it’s not just as simple as picking one! I will look into it much further. Thanks again x

Another thought going back to reply # 10
1851 Mary Ann Pratt is born Reeth, Yorkshire****
And on other Census always in Yorkshire
Reeth is only a couple of miles from Grinton
-

In other censuses Mary Ann's birthplace is given as Healey, which could well actually be Healaugh which is about a mile west of Reeth.
-
Does this sound like it would fit in for James Aldersons parents??
James Alderson born 13 July 1780 muker Yorkshire
Amelia Millison Harker born 1 January 1781 Dent Yorkshire
Im looking for their marriage record and connections to James jnr

What is the chain of evidence that leads you back from James to the births of these two people?
-
They are the suggested parents on ancestry...
like I say I’m busy looking for the marriage record and connection to James Alderson
I’m not very clued up on Yorkshire areas, so thought I would ask as I don’t take what ancestry suggests as gospel until I find the connections.
