I haven't been able to find a surviving service record for James Edward MOORE, Pte 6634,1st / 8th Btn, D.L.I. who was killed in action 5th Nov 1916, aged 21 and is remembered at Thiepval.
I do have the register of soldiers effects record for him and there are 6 entries in the 'to whom and amount authorised' columns.
Question:
Was it usual to make payments to the survivors of half siblings?
Payments:
12.03.17 Mo(ther) Hannah - £3 7s 6d. That checks out and makes sense, he was the son of John Moore (who died prior to the 1911 census) and his wife Hannah (nee Harwood, formerly Weightman), who died 23 Nov 1917.
07.05.17 Mrs Eleanor L Weightman 8s 5d
Eleanor was by then the 'widow' of James Edward's elder half brother, John Weightman (same mother, different father) and John died a month before James Edward did (not in the forces)
18.05.20 Bro. Wm T £3 - James Edward's brother William Thomas Moore, I can only assume there was some further payment to be made and was made to him as the eldest surviving relative, so that makes some sense.
05 06.20 Another payment to Mrs Eleanor L Weightman - 5s which is really odd as she died in 1918 - though I can't tell if it was cancelled and then perhaps re-paid in the next entry? (the image seems to say both Cancelled and Paid)
05.07.20 Mrs Catherine Brymer - 5s. Catherine was Eleanor L Wightman (nee Payne)'s sister and perhaps was now responsible for bringing up Eleanor's children.
20.11.20 Thomas Cecil Weightman - 5s. Thomas Cecil was the eldest (born 1903) of Eleanor L Weightman's children
Hope the above makes some sort of sense (its taken me a while to suss out who the recipients of the payments were!)

How sad,,would he have made it clear in a will, I believe soldiers had to make a will.
He seems to have thought of everyone related to him.

If there had been a will which looks likely monies owing would have been shared out in accordance with it.
The first 2 payments went to his Mother as NOK & Eleanor as named in his will.
The 1920 payment to William may be because Hannah had died & he was NOK.
The other payment to Eleanor was crossed out because she had died & the money went to Catherine & Thomas.

I did wonder about a will, but have searched the soldiers wills database and nothing coming up. Neither is there anything in the probate calendar (I looked in case he'd written one before he joined up, not too sure how that would have worked but best to check)
Though stranger things happened, I find it odd that at the time of his death he had 6 surviving full siblings and payments were made to the widow of a half sibling, plus one of her children and a payment to one full sibling but no mention of the other 5 full siblings.
I'll add it to the long (and growing) list of things I may never find an explanation for :-)
I'm not begrudging Eleanor the small amounts she was paid, she'd been left as a widow with three young children and probably, had James Edward survived, he would have helped the family financially if he could, its what families did/still do. I just get nosey about how all this kind of thing worked
