Title: Searching for Vittorio Riella Mastaglio
Post by: Spiral on Wednesday 05 December 18 23:29 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the birth and parents of Vittorio Riella/Realla Mastaglio who was born in  Dosso del Liro Lombardy about 1810 according to most of his census entries - however his death registration in 1875 suggests he was born about 1806.
He emigrated to Newcastle Upon Tyne prior to 1835 when he marries a local catholic girl Mary Ann Fleming. Later, after her death, he remarries in 1859 and on this record he states that his father is John Anthony Mastaglio, a miller.  I am assuming that this should be Giovanni Antonio Mastaglio and that the occupation is correct although I am a little suspicious because his first wife's father was definitely a miller.
Has anyone any ideas about where I can go from here?

Thanks for that. I will buy the download and see if it takes me any further. They also have Edward Cetti on there and he as well as Vittorio are listed as Austrian! That must have annoyed them both. I believe Edward sent money to support Garibaldi and possibly so did Vittorio.

They are described as Austrian subjects which was true in 1850.

The popular republic [of Lombardy]established by the 1848 revolution was short-lived, its suppression leading to renewed Austrian rule. This came to a decisive end when Lombardy was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy 1859 as a result of the Second Italian Independence War.

The document mentioned above contains the following info:
Memorial (July 1850):  He is 40y and a merchant. He has 6 English born children and an English wife. He is formerly of Dosso Liro – Como – Lombardy , Subject of Austria and had resided in Newcastle upon Tyne for 23 years

This information gets repeated by in the 4 affidavits that are part of this document. They seem to follow an identical format and wording …

You probably will need to do some local research in Dosso del Liro. From the records that are online (1866 onwards) there are a couple of deaths of daughters of a Giovanni Antonio Mastaglio and Rosa Toja:

Rosa died 1903 aged 73
Anna died 1887 aged 67

There are still Mastaglio families in Dosso del Liro who may be able to help.

Thanks for that Shaun. Contacting those Mastaglio families in Dosso del Liro will have to wait until my Italian is a LOT better. I was interested to see that there is still a Riella family living there still. I had suspected that the “Realla” given as Victorio’s second name in the 1833 Poll book should be Riella as a known Italian surname. Perhaps Rosa was a second wife. More research!
