Title: Text recognition searches
Post by: Fresh Fields on Monday 31 December 18 20:19 GMT (UK)
New Year Greetings.

While a "FARMERS' CLUB" search will not find this clipping, it was very easy re-found to bring it to PP attention.

A change from GLUE to CLUB [by PP staff] will bring it up in future FARMERS' CLUB searches.

Found by accident while researching a similar subject, and had omitted to select EXACT before actioning the search. Doubt that I would have thought to have used GLUE, as an alternative spelling, to locate a missing club report.

Cheers Alan!

We don't have an easy way to make spot corrections like these at this point, in the interim I'd suggest the best strategy would be to make judicious use of fuzzy search when you come across scenarios like this.

e.g. farmers club~2

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers?items_per_page=100&snippet=true&query=farmers+club%7E2 (https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers?items_per_page=100&snippet=true&query=farmers+club%7E2)

Some letters are readily mistaken by the OCR process due to factors like varying image quality, or different fonts (serif vs sans for example, or i/l/j, f/t, C/G, etc), and it can be well worthwhile adding ~1 or ~2 to words that have characters or obvious variants. This will search for every one or two-character variant of that word.

Great.

Thanks for the acknowledgement.

Having transcribed thousands of words from PapersPast search finds, I'm well aware of the recognition problems, but was unaware you did not have a ready fix, for altering the interpretation in future search requests of your retrieval system.

Over time you develop a number of techniques to locate missing copy, within a single issue, or a series, over a time period, by one masthead. Or go looking for re-prints of material of interest you have located from the old Library index cards, as having been published in the AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS or the Christchurch THE WEEKLY PRESS. [Publications yet to be digitized]

Without your continued efforts, these heritage items would only be available to those who have access to the original print. Great work - keep it up please.

Alan.

Hi folks!

It's been a busy start to the PP year, and we've got a couple of releases coming to you in close succession over the coming weeks.

The first is a small release (around 2000 pages) of a pair of 1970's-1980's magazine titles:

Te Kaea (1979-81)
Tu Tangata (1981-1987)

Those of you with Maori heritage might find this interesting - the relatively recent date of the publications is a bit of a change from the usual PP scenario too. All going well, it should be up next week sometime.

In the weeks following that, we'll be putting out a newspapers release, containing:

Lyttelton Times (1915-1920)
Manawatu Standard (1924-1945)
Nelson Evening Mail (1923-1930)
Press (Jan-Jun 1887, Sep-Nov 1903)
Waikato Times (1922-1928)

Hi folks,

yesterday saw another 140,000-ish pages added to PP - we added a large run of Ashburton Guardian up to 1950, the entire run of Industrial Unionist (1913), and we extended the Wairarapa Daily Times collection up to 1938.

We've also updated the information on the "help" page to include more search examples and techniques, some additional notes around zooming and the mobile view, cookies, and research approach tips. The additional information comes from the user satisfaction survey we ran a few months ago. We had a few responses to that survey that included comments like "It needs boolean search tools" and "where have the search filters gone?", and it was unfortunate that we had no way to get in touch with those people so the best I could do was to improve the help page to cover off all the stuff that came up.

I know you folks have a few tricks up your sleeve, but you might find a few things here and there useful in the updated info. As always, just let me know if you have any specific questions, I'm always glad to help.

Happy hunting!

Hi everyone,

Exciting news!

From an article just published in the latest issue of The New Zealand Genealogist comes a mention that the New Zealand Police Gazette, at present digitized and available on Archway, will soon be uploaded on to Papers Past.

Can Papers Past provide an approximate date when this may take place?

I recall having the Police Gazette on my Papers Past wish-list a couple of years ago, so I'm very pleased to hear it's going to happen.

Hi Spades! Sheepishly I can tell you that it happened back in early August. We added three Police Gazette titles to the Magazines section of the collection, giving combined coverage of 1863-1945.

I was on and off work at the time following a head injury and I wasn't as on-the-ball with notifying you all as I normally am. I'm very sorry about that. It's a cracking good source though, we're really proud to make this available on the site - it's been a long time coming.

SO much easier to search and read results!

I just tried to search using 'deserters' and got 1544 results. For those interested the Gazette using different headings to differentiate the type of deserter, so you can narrow the search by trying;

Deserters from Merchant Vessel.
Deserters from His Majesty’s Service.
ABSENTEES, DESERTERS, ETC., FROM HIS MAJESTY’S SERVICE

Hello Minniehaha.

A lot of computer packages will include a programme that will allow for the rotating of an image, It's just a case of finding what you already have access too, and then we can take a few screen shots showing the steps that need to be taken to achieve your objective.

Feel free to PM me if you wish, and I will see if I can help. Lost access to a good, for me, programme when computers up scaled from 32 to 64 bit technology, but I have the basic ablilty with at least two progammes that came with my new computer's package.

Question:

Not being in the slightest 'tech savvy', can the pages that are presented side-on, be rotated please?

We didn't have the resources to add a rotate-on-the-fly software feature to the site, but we played around with this and tested different out-of-the-box setups. Some had rotated images, and it wasn't quite the straightforward situation you might imagine. When those images are rotated away from their natural print orientation, they become much wider, which causes problems for scaling the material. You end up with a choice between either having a readability issue with the landscape width stuff scaled down to fit the width of a portrait page, or having all of the material more readable but some of it rotated. A third option was landscape-rotated and eveything scaled in proportion, which makes everything small, so this was a non-starter.

After a lot of back-and-forth, we went with the second option. It felt like the most day-to-day usable of the choices - it's still a compromise, but less compromise than the others.

Hello again.

In regards to my above offer. If you are particularly interested in the likes of the large MISSING FRIENDS tables, and would like a copy for your records, it would be possible to process the image as two halves which could then be joined for a landscape display. Then reproduced as A4 or A3 landscape for your kept paper research records.

Hi folks, just letting you know that we're doing a bunch of under-the-hood work on PP today, and this will make some cookies go bad on some people's browsers. It may not impact many people, but I thought it best to let you all know. Unfortunately, this is hard to avoid - but fortunately it's also super simple to fix, so it's not too bad.

If you see anything funny happen particularly with lists of search results, just close any PP tabs you have open, delete the PP cookies from your browser, then you're all good to go again.

I'm around to help if you have any questions :-)

Hello folks -

It's new content release day in our newspapers collection - this is a sizeable release from a page-count perspective, 140,000. The new additions include:

    Franklin Times (1934-1945)
    Manawatu Times (1929-1936)
    Nelson Evening Mail (1931-1937)
    Northern Advocate (1946-1949)
    Timaru Herald (1921-1928)
    Waihi Daily Telegraph (1942,1945-1947,1949-1950)
    Waikato Times (1929-1935)

If any of you have any issues seeing the new material, try clearing your cookies and doing a hard refresh on the webpage (Ctrl-F5 on a windows machine, Shift-Cmd-R on a Mac), that will sort things out.

Enjoy!

Hello folks, I'm guessing that many of you will, like myself, be in lockdown. I hope you're all doing ok!

We're very lucky to be able to work remotely, so we're doing what we can to make this time a productive one for folks that use PP - we've got a content release coming your way in the next few days.

It will contain:

•   Gisborne Times (1901-1937)
•   Hokitika Guardian  (1917-1940)
•   Opotiki News (1938-1950)
•   Saturday Advertiser (July 1875-1878)
•   Wanganui Chronicle (1860-1869)

It includes a decent nibble into the 20th century coverage of Gisborne, and fills a gap we had in the Wanganui area too. I hope you have fun digging in to this.

All the best from the PP team - stay safe in there  ;)

Post by: PapersPast on Wednesday 23 September 20 01:52 BST (UK)
Hi folks -

I thought I'd pass a wee search tip along for Births/Deaths notices, helpfully prompted by an email I got from Rootschat user Thamesite:

She was having difficulty searching for a surname that very clearly was printed on a newspaper page, and despite the letters of the name being recognised correctly, the name wasn't showing up in her search results. Here's an example, where I've done a search for "Brien" - https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/THS19260318.2.9.1?query=brien (https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/THS19260318.2.9.1?query=brien)

You'll notice that "Brien" isn't highlighted, despite the letters appearing correctly in the "text" view of the article.

Our search index treats strings of characters with a space before and after them as being words, so
I figured out that the ".—" characters immediately after the name, with no space, have a big impact.
They're effectively turning the name "Brien" into "Brien.—On".

No-one is going to search for a name "Brien.—On"!
Unfortunately this looks like a very common typographic convention in older newspapers within family and personal notices - this means all those names that are followed by ".—", as they often were in those notices, might well be missing from your searches.

There is a solution - to find any "missing" results, search for the surname followed by an asterisk (boolean wildcard). For example:

brien*

This search trick works on the "all of these words" search setting.

Substitute "brien" for any surname you're looking for, and give it a crack! Good luck all, and thanks again to Thamesite.

Post by: Fresh Fields on Wednesday 23 September 20 02:10 BST (UK)
Thanks for the tip.

I had noted from time to time that highlighting was sometimes rather random, and this point will help to explain it.

For a period the NZ HERALD in particular, was a very heavily inked press with many bleeds and blotches, which the human eye tends to ignore, but evidently, not the optical reader.

Alan.
Title: Re: PAPERS PAST - Part V
Post by: PapersPast on Wednesday 23 September 20 04:31 BST (UK)
You're welcome Alan. Spot-on correct about some editions of the NZ Herald - the ones we digitised from around the WW1 period have a lot of ink-bleed and print-quality issues.

If any of you ever see what looks like random-looking highlighting, it's worth taking a moment to click on the text tab just above the article image to see how the words in question have been identified. It'll give you a few leads on how you might spot other unidentified occurrences elsewhere in the collection by searching using a few basic boolean tricks. Fuzzy search (name~1), wildcard substitutions (Auckl*) and character substitutions (Dun?din) are the obvious approaches to consider, but it really is very case-by-case!

As always, don't hesitate to get in touch if you want a hand  :)

Hello again.

As I started my researching hobby long before the internet, when we were obliged to spend hours in libraries, archives, and museums, going through their holdings. It’s a privilege to now be able to sit in front of a computer, at home, and have access to all the material on offer, on line.

However it is important to remember the systems in place to optically scan, and then digitally reproduce the written word, does have it’s limitations.

Because you don’t find an item in a search engine service, does not mean that it is not there.

Parts of articles can be carried forward to other columns within the paper or book, leaving you to miss an all important associated item, with regard to your search. Likewise imperfections in the inking and printing thereof of type, can see key searched for words being missed by the scanner.

If looking for further, and or more detailed press reports of an incident, do searches also for secondary associated items, that are included in the material that you have collected.

It can often be found that by the time an incident gets to a court hearing, the place name of the incident is more technically correct; so a different name or spelling, BUT the attending named persons in the first press reports, will also be those called upon to give evidence, to the court. So also search using the named attending police, medical providers, teacher, instructor or priest etc.

Tonight I decided to check once again, that I had not overlooked an item in my MYERS research of late.

I set my search criteria as  “Myers*”  and attached below are a few examples of highlighted text findings from 3,345 hits, over a seven year search period, with adverts excluded. They are an example of what I call random hits.

Happy hunting,

Alan.

Plus a completely random selection within one search hit, was recieved, but not sure wether it will replicate.

OPEN ENDED all these words search for   “Charles 3rd Waikato Militia”   results giving 513 hits.

In the link below there were many highlighted words, and spaces, that to my eye were quite random.

Very interesting Alan, I always appreciate the visibility that extra eyeballs bring, I would never have spotted that myself.

Looking at the page-level view of that article is also quite informative, and suggests some reasons why the highlighting isn't great on this one - https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/colonist/1860/11/10/1 (https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/colonist/1860/11/10/1) - it looks to me like the page was printed with a bit of radial skew. Nowadays we usually run an automated image de-skew process that mitigates this, but it's possible that this image predates that, or somehow missed that step. The follow-on impact of that is that the automated zoning we map out for article boundaries (which is obviously all based around rectilinear shapes with 90 degree corners) actually doesn't map very well on this skewed article. In turn, the highlighting (which is based on those automated zones) doesn't map.

You'll notice that the highlighting in the "Journal of events at Taranaki" article is often one-and-a-half lines above the word it should relate to, and a little to the side. I'll pass this one back to the digitisation team and see if this is something we can maybe reprocess to improve.

Backtracking slightly to typographic conventions throwing off word/name recognition, and the convention of having ".—" immediately following a name in a family notice: A key thing to keep in mind is the context of that convention - in the places this is used (birth or death notices), you'll find other typical keywords like "Born" or "missed", so an approach with a wildcard could be augmented with those other keywords to focus the results on those types of things.

e.g.

brien* born

...will surface additional relevant results that wouldn't have shown up in a straight "Brien born" search.

Hello EMMERSON.

Herewith an exercise in searching out a series within a regular newspaper. One article caught, my eye when undertaking some pioneer research. It took me three goes to complete the series, which I'm about to offer to descendants, including further research by members of this forum and volunteers from the Waiuku Museum.

As stated in an earlier post, just because you DONT GET A HIT, it does not mean that the item is not in print. Try alternative search criteria.

Examples attached, plus link to GRANDMAMA'S Story thread.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=839360.0

Keep up your good work.

Alan.

Clipping examples of where the continuing series has NOT been linked. Not found using "GRANDMAMA'S STORY" nor "By A Waikato Lady".  So went to the publication listings, and page image searching, on possible days of publication, as per table above.

You'll put me out of a job Alan :)

This is an excellent example for anyone wanting to get a bit more out of a lot of content. Doing a text search to find things is a great time-saver, but if you have the confidence to go looking for specific pages, dates, articles, you can sometimes plug the gaps that search can't fill.

Hi folks, happy new year to you all!

Some of you may recall that last year we ran a survey on the site asking for feedback from people. Some of you may have contributed your thoughts - and if so, thank you.

I just wanted to follow-up with you and let you all know that we have introduced some small changes to the site, informed by the feedback we got, hopefully to make the site a little bit more helpful.

The first two of these changes are visible by clicking inside the search box:

1 - you can now choose to search either all of the newspaper content or just the most recent content release
2 - we have included a link to the search help beside the search box, so people can more easily see how to do things like removing words from their search results, and other boolean tricks.

The other change is a little more subtle, to help people keep good references:

3 - we have included the page numbers in the information that appears alongside an article. You'll see on the right of the article that appears on https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/GIST19010411.2.23, you can see that the bibliographic info now includes the page number.  e.g:

CONFUSING CABLEGRAMS. Gisborne Times, Volume V, Issue 79, 11 April 1901, Page 2

This is included when you print out an article from the site too.

I hope this is of some help to those of you that took the time to provide feedback. We will be running the survey again later this year if any of you have any more good ideas!

Hi folks -

...and now for something completely different. Later this week we hope to have the New Zealand Journal of Agriculture from 1910-1960 live in the Magazines & Journals section of the site.

I don't really have a strong grasp on how it might stack up as a genealogy resource, and some of the farming science in its pages has been superceded. That said, it has some cracking good recipes in its pages. A content release for the baking enthusiasts perhaps?

Hi folks, I hope you're all doing well!

We're gearing up for what we think is a quite significant release, this will be going live hopefully next week:

Kaikoura Star (misc. issues 1880-1922, 1923-1950)
Kawhia Settler and Raglan Advertiser (1905-1933)
Taranaki Central Press (November 1936-July 1937)
Press (1946-1961)

This is the first time we've pushed into the 1960's - this is the first release in a series that will see the Press digitised up to 1995 on the site, thanks to the help of the teams at Press and Stuff/Fairfax, who gave us their permission to do this.

    Hawke’s Bay Tribune (1921-September 1936)

Thanks Lucy! This content all came from our collaborative programme - you might be interested to know that the Grey River Argus additions were funded in partnership with a Wellington woman, she chose the title and paid for half of it to get it online. Normally we partner with various community or civic groups, but she took this on herself - so we owe a very big thanks to her for this.

A question for PapersPast.

Are you able to provide any timeline as to when the Taranaki Daily News will be added to on the PP site. Particularly interested in the mid to late 1930s period.

Many thanks.

Thank you for the release.

Found a number of AUCKLAND EXAMINER references to family. All not seen before, but affirming family oral history accounts.

Great to be able to find hard copy.

Thanks PP.

Thank you for the new additions - Hauraki Plains I hope will give me a little snippet or two.

Pleased for you Lu, you have earned a break in your own research, considering how much you contribute to the research of other members.

Papers Past also appreciate the feed back that lets them know, that all their diligent work put into going digital, is so worth while.

Thanks ... always nice to be able to share a good news story.   :)
This particular "now-solved" one, has though just about cost me, my kids inheritance ... but think how much "richer" they'll be, for having a more complete family tree.   ;D   ;D
