Hi All.
I would really appreciate any views that you have on a mystery I have come across while researching for a friend.
Robert Iles married Mary Jane Hall in Bristol in 1884. They had their first child, Isaac, later that year, 1884 with mother given as Mary Jane Iles nee Hall.
Albert was born 1886 with mother given as Mary Jane Iles nee Hall.
Emma Mary was born December 1887 mother given as Mary Jane Iles nee Hall, but when she was baptised January 1888 the mother was named as Mary LOUISA Iles.
Then Elsie Eliza was born 1890 with mother given as Mary Louise Iles nee Lidgett and baptised 1892 mother Mary Louisa.
Gilbert Ernest was born 1893 with mother given as Mary Louise Iles nee Lidgett
Then Emma Louise was born 1899 and mother is back to Mary Jane Iles nee Hall.
My problem is understanding why the mother's name changes from Mary Jane Hall to Mary Louise Lidgett and then back again. The 1891 Census just shows her as Mary Iles, so is no help, and the 1901 shows her as Mary L. ( after she had gone back to Mary Jane for the 1899 birth of Emma).
I am convinced that this is the same woman every time, but does anybody have any idea as to what is going on here ? All the information comes from birth certificates, and the children are definitely siblings, so it's a mystery.
Incidentally, Lidgett is/was predominantly a Northern name, however there was a birth in Clifton Bristol in 1856 for a Mary Louisa Lidgett, however I can find no other reference to her after.
Any help or possible solutions to this would be most appreciated as the child of one of the siblings is totally mystified but eager to find out. Thankyou

I notice that Mary Louisa's mmn was Palmer. There are no other Lidgett/Palmer births & there is no Lidgett/Palmer marriage that I can see.
It's possible she's on the census under the name Palmer.
You may need her birth cert. to rule her in or out.
What was her marital status on the marriage cert.?
Who does she name as her father?
Have you found a marriage for her to ? Hall?

Marriage 18 Feb 1884
Mary Jane Hall single father James Hall
Robert Iles single father Isaac Iles
Only a transcription so can't view more details

Mary Jane Hall
Mar 1861 Clifton
Mothers name Hill
perhaps as Mary is 30 in 1891
There is a Bristol marriage Sep 1848 with a Hall and a Hill but 4 couples :-\
Hall is James which is correct
Hill is Mary Ann
-
So Mary Jane & Mary Louisa are 2 different people.

I dont think they are due to the birth of the child in December 1887 mmn Hall and its baptism just weeks later mmn Lidgett.

Definitely no marriage of Robert Iles to Mary Louise Lidgett, and Mary Jane nee Hall didnt die until 1905.
1901 Census shows Robert and Mary L living in same house as he had been with Mary J. Its almost certainly the same woman but why would she pretend to be somebody else ?

Certainly puzzling.
Any sign of her before she married? We know her father was James which is a start. James Hall.
Possibly there is some link to the Lidgett family we have yet to find.

Hadnt really searched for her prior to her marriage as Mary Hall is a very common name, and there is no sign of a Lidgett famiy in the Bristol area apart from the Mary Louise born 1856, who may not be anything to do with this puzzle at all anyway.
My initial thought was that Robert was being a naughty boy and having children with another woman while still married but looking at everything as a whole, this seems most unlikely

There is this family - Head of household is Elijah but transcribed as Clifer
1861 1739/40/32
Elijah Hall 25 yrs
Jane Hall 25 yrs
George S Hall 1 yr
Mary J Hall 1 month
Marriage 1857 Elijah Hall and Jane Hill on same page and children above have mmn Hill.
Not that this helps at all with the puzzle.

I wonder if her marriage certificate would help us any? Witness names, where she was living. Long shot but she must have been somewhere prior to marriage and witness names especially could be of use.
The one with father Elijah marries in 1884 to Charles Pine.
