Title: Ada Louisa Skinner completely missing after her marriage in 1892
Post by: MrsSelfPub on Thursday 06 December 18 13:56 GMT (UK)
Hello

I am on the hunt for what happened to Ada Louisa Skinner born in Poole, Dorset in 1868, daughter of Abel Skinner (merchant seaman) and Mary Ann Skinner.

I have her marriage certificate (copy) from 1892 to Francesco Bancone (he is the relative I am interested in) but she completely disappears after this and I cannot find any record of her.  He goes on to have a relationship and children with Sarah Sophia Lanham but still lists himself as 'married' and has 19 complete years of marriage on 1911 Census.

There are many mysteries to do with this man (a musician from Naples) and I am keen to find out what became of his wife.

Any assistance is most welcome.

Thank you

It looks as if the children are in the names of Lanham Bancone on 1901, first child with this name looks a if born 1895, have you any of these birth certs to clarify if he is the father of these children

Louisa Maud

Just found
1896 Maria Domenica Bancone birth, MMN Lanhan
so by 1896 he had left Ada

Is it possible that Ada  Louisa Bancone/Skinner emigrated, her father was born in Newfoundland, just a thought

I can't find her so far but it seems as if Mr Bancone  very quickly was cohabiting with Mrs Lanham, she is shown as housekeeper on census, at least 1 child registered as Bancone , only checked 1 so far

Vincent and Louisa Pent in 1910. The 1900 US census implies the couple married in England but the 1910 US census implies they married in the US. I guess the next thing is to look for them on immigration records.

In 1915 they had a daughter age 5 with them Viola Rose Mary Pent. She married Philip G Becker in June 1934
The 1900 census says they immigrated in 1895. I haven't found a marriage for them on FreeBMD.

Amazing results - thank you, everyone  :D

Just wondering though, could the US records be wrong as her father was born in Newfoundland rather than England? Perhaps she herself didn't know this fact?

I can't find Vincent Pent in the UK BMD - Pent is not a common English name so it should show up.  1930 US Census has a Vincent Pent born in Illinois with parents from Italy so perhaps his name has been anglicised.  Daughter living with him born c.1911 - was this the daughter he had with Ada Louisa?  He is now married to a younger woman and has more children with her.

I also need to work out how to discover what happened regarding her marriage to Francesco Bancone.  Was it annulled?  Did they divorce?  Nothing showing up on the UK records I can see via Ancestry....yet  :)

I can't see a divorce for them on ancestry's England & Wales, Civil Divorce Records, 1858-1916.
At that time it is much more likely that they both just went their own ways as most in their position couldn't afford the cost of divorcing. So quite likely that Vincent and Ada never married or of they did it would be in the US where nobody knew them.

I see on the 1911 census Francesco says he is married but Sarah is down as single and is the  housekeeper so he is not pretending  to be married to Sarah.

He isn't shown as being married to M/S Lanham, think she is shown as housekeeper on census, I did find one child registered as Bancone, didn't check the rest as that was good enough for me

Plenty of crew records on Ancestry for Abel/Able

Divorce records are held at Kew archives

Perhaps  Ada and her new husband chose not to divulge she was already married, or she didn't tell him, the fact that Mr Bancone didn't appear to marry M/S Lanhan might prove  he thought he  was still married

A Vincent Joseph Pent, a widower, married Elizabeth McCoy in New York in 1922- mother named as Rosa Bencone (coincidence?).Yob given as 1889

Looking at 1930 (note he has a daughter called Viola) and 1940  census I wonder if all these records are for the same person and he was being creative age wise.

This is becoming more and more curious. It had crossed my mind that Francesco, Ada Louisa and Sarah Sophia were not necessarily being honest about their various marital statuses AND years of birth do also seem to vary.  Perhaps this was something that was commonly done when one ran off to the USA!!!

The coincidence of the mother being Rosa Bencone is just about to blow my mind.  I have a Rosa Bancone on my list of possible links to Francesco!  Going to try to correlate dates.....

Francesco was born circa 1854 Italy, there must be a connection somewhere, Rosa born 1855
sister or sister in law?

Ancestry has photos of Rosa including a family group

But by 1939 Sarah Lanham is calling herself Sarah Bancone, although no sign of a marriage. Francesco dies in 1935, and Pippino Lanham as in the 1911 census is Pippino Bancone by 1939.

Have we discovered who Francesco's parents  were from marriage cert.

He stated he had been in England  40 years, so I assume he arrived circa 1871, wonder if he came alone?.

Would not normally suggest this but there is a tree on Ancestry with a Vincent  Vincenzo James Pinto b1872 in Italy mother Rosa Bancone Pento Pinto b1855 Italy which may provide some pointers.(Her maiden name is  Bancone -married name Pinto.) They settled in New Jersey.

Also note that there is  an outward passenger list toNew York for  a Frank Bancone year of birth given as 1860 but showing as a musician 3/8/1895 and an incoming entry about a month later for a F Bancone  . Did he go looking for Ada?

I saw that entry 1895 William, he  alone, assuming Ada had already gone, she should be listed in outgoing records somewhere but under what  name?

If onły we knew what our ancestors got up to
