Title: baptism lookup please huddersfield Q1 1903
Post by: jackski on Saturday 08 December 18 12:19 GMT (UK)
Hi
I'm looking for a baptism of Clara Emily Copley in Huddersfield. The birth was registered Q1 1903 and the family were living at Quay Street in Huddersfield which is near the turnbridge over the canal. I've looked at St Peter's which are online but can't find anything there. I'm wondering maybe St Paul's which would perhaps be the next nearest? Or any others that anybody has access to.
I'd like details of the date and mother's name. I don't think a father's name will be there, as there is no father's name on her marriage entry of 1927.
Thanks

Hi

I would look at St. Mark's or St. Andrew's but there were also some non-con in the area. Do you know if they were chapel or church.

It looks as though her potential mother/aunt, Louisa Copley b 29 July 1883, was baptised 9 September 1883 at St Peter’s (parents Joseph & Harriet) so not a nonconformist family - at least at that stage.

Perhaps they simply avoided baptism for an illegitimate child.

From other evidence it looks as though Clara may have been treated as a late daughter of Harriet, but given that she was registered as Copley rather than Hissett (Harriet’s married name from 1900) she’s more likely to be an illegitimate granddaughter.

The pdf of Clara’s birth registration can be obtained from GRO Online for £6.

Perhaps even more pertinent is that Ellis and Harriet Hissett did have a son, Charles Arthur Hissett, on 29 May 1903 and had him baptised at St Peter’s on 26 July 1903.  Their address at the time was 14 Lily St.

So Harriet couldn’t have given birth to Clara as well.

Hi

No mother maiden name in GRO so it would look like she was born out of wedlock.

Hi

Had a look and Ellis & Harriet Hissett only had one child; Charles Arthur Hissett born 29 May 1903 so it would mean Clara Emily Copley was the daughter of one of Harriet & first husband, (Joseph Copley).
I would think it was Louisa Copley.
Harriet Copley nee Harriet Quarmby married Ellis Hissett 3 December 1900 at Huddersfield New North Road Baptist. I don't recall seeing any records for that Chapel so you might have to get the certificate.

Thanks everybody - you have confirmed all my suspicions, as these were all conclusions I had reached myself, but without a baptism it looks like we will have to go down the birth certificate route.
Thanks
