Title: Ho ho hoping someone can do a Wellington look up for me
Post by: Kiwi Girl on Sunday 09 December 18 00:00 GMT (UK)
 :)  Hello Rootschatters,

Long time, no post from me.  It seems full time study, part time work, full time Mum-ing and part time Scout leading does not lend itself to family tree sleuthing.

I hope you are all well and looking forward to some nicer weather over the festive season.  8)

I am starting my family tree hunt off with someone I am not even remotely related to, but who I see when I drive through Waikumete - Matilda / Mathilde Studer https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23815422 (https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23815422)

On her headstone is just says 'Mathilde Studer 1906 - 1962  R.I.P".  On Archway she is listed as Matilda Studer, but right year of death.  Seems sad that she was no one's daughter, sister, mother or aunt.  I just found her on the cemetery search. https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/cemeteries/Pages/RecordDetails.aspx?recordId=C71C60F1311C0BEE3C1ACC6C69ECB475 (https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/cemeteries/Pages/RecordDetails.aspx?recordId=C71C60F1311C0BEE3C1ACC6C69ECB475) So I guess she was Catholic.

She is my curiosity case at the moment... any of you seasoned sleuthers able to shed some light?

I cannot see anything KG.
Just that burial.  Nothing extra recorded in burial book.
I don’t see her in any in electoral rolls.
No marriage to a Studer so don’t know if married or maiden name (as poss marriage in Switzerland prior)
There is a Walter Studer touring  the country (NZ) in 1934. An economist?  Seems to have a lot to say about the depression and US markets. Coincidence?
There are only 6 Studer deaths since 1920, the first in 1961.  None fit as a potential husband.
But I am thinking there might be some spelling issues as there ought to be a death for that F Studer who shows on PapersPast. (Not that I think he belongs to her)

Arrival in NZ.?  Think you are correct in needing that naturalisation document.

Her mystery continues... I am glad, in a way, that I hadn't just lost my knack - she is playing hard to find.  I wonder if such simple annotations on the headstone are a Swiss thing, or if she was just a lone lady over here.  Once we have found out more about her, I think I will get her plot tidied up.  She just seems so alone over there, and she has such a pretty name...

Does Auckland library hold 1962 newspapers?  Or Archives at Mangere?  (Thinking of a death notice).
Undertakers?

Ooooh Janette, you are still magic!  So she had a brother in the States and she ended up here...  how very intriguing.  I wonder if she came over with him and if he was the American Walter Studer that Mckha found in paperspast...  :)  Hmmm, re-read your post and saw it was A Studer that was her contact...

It might be worth asking the office at Waikumete for a printout of their records
We don't get the same information on the database like we used to

Thanks so much guys, as usual you have worked a miracle in my absence... I managed to spill my lone, celebratory g'n't over my laptop keyboard last night.  Here's hoping it dries out and sobers up so I can chase down leads on the comparatively big screen, rather than on my phone  ::)

Port of Departure:    Genua
Port of Arrival:    Sydney Aurtr

Name:    Mathilde Studer
Gender:    weiblich (Female)
Birth Year:    1906
Place of Origin:    Hägendorf, Solothurn, Schweiz (Switzerland)
Last Residence:    Limbach, Österreich (Austria)
Departure Date:    Feb 1951

I think the ship was Vivaldi.

I can't see anything on the document that says anything to do with Austria for Mathilde, I think her last residence is Trimbach, Sol.  No mention of Austria.
I can send you the images if you want.

Regards,
Daisy

Nice finds guys... maybe Emil felt that Adolf wasn't a name to travel with  post 1940s, and he was A Studer whom she met up with in the States..?

But if she was nee Meier, then perhaps this Mathilde Studer is a different person....

sorry I admit I haven't read thr the 3 pages but I may or maynot be repeating info but there was a departure from London England in 1951 for Mathilde Studer arriving in freemantle in transit to new Zealand, she was travelling with an Emil and jurg, all being single at the time of travel

there is also immigration papers from Switzerland for 1951 for the same name, perhaps that helps narrow things a little?

Hi Kiwi Girl, and Happy new Year!

Would you like me to look for the Archives NZ Wellington file listed by Minniehaha in Reply#7?

I visited Archives NZ today and took photos of the immigration file for Emil Adolf STUDER, Mathide's husband.

It's a goldmine. And a photo to boot.

Now to wait patiently to surprise Kiwi Girl. Hope she wants it... ??? ???

Spades,

You are amazing!  And here I thought I was the bee's knees finding her death notice in the NZ Herald, confirming she was Emil's wife and Mother of Georgie (Jorg?) and Rosemarie.

I now wait in eager anticipation of your most amazing discovery!

P.S.
I was out of wifi contact for a bit and had spotty data coverage.  ;)

Hi Kiwi Girl,

Just to note the spelling of the Christian name...

It appears to be Rosmarie. Without an 'e'...... ;) It tripped me up for a while.

Reply much like the Matilde/ Matilda spelling of her Mum.  So glad to have something to put with the headstone. I'll go give her a wee tidy up, or con...vince my friend who does grave cleaning there to give me a hand - watch out Good Cemeterianz! lol

My topic is now complete thanks to Spades for the look up, and to you all for your help.

Went for a visit today - tidied up a bit, but the grave was covered, on purpose, with scoria, so it's not going to look pristine.  Visited her Daughter and Son in Law too
