Private 7089 Arthur Horace Skinner, Leicestershire Regiment, was KIA on 23.9.1914 and is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, which is 66 kilometres east of Paris (sort of half-way between Paris and Reims).
According to an online source I've found, the Regiment's War diary says the Battalion was at "Fosse Maruel" on that day, but I don't know where that was. I've tried finding the Regiment's war diary on Ancestry, but the ones for 1914 don't seem to be there - or perhaps I'm just not searching properly :-[
Can anyone help with this location, please?

I believe it is a memorial to those killed and whose bodies were not recovered, in the Marne/Aisne battles of September/October 1914,

The war diary for Aug 1914 to Nov 1915 is on Ancestry under Various Infantry Brigades - 6th Division - Piece 1611. Starts at image 350.
The war diary calls it Fosse Marguel. In France by this time on the south side of the Aisne which they crossed north again on 21 Sep from Courcelles. Last place I can positively ID is Mont Notre Dame, there are a number of places with Courcelles in the name, need to check that out first.

From the 16 Brigade diary it seems that the Courcelles would be Courcelles sur Vesles south of Vailly where the brigade were making for back towards the Aisne and where they were in position at the end of September. There is a map in that diary of the brigade positions just north east of Vailly which includes Rouge Maison Farm which the Leicesters were reconnoitring on 23 Sep. My feeling is that this is about as near as one would get to the probable location.

As Fosse is usually the word given to a ditch or small water course, it may be the local name for the water feature running north from the Aisne to the east and parallel to the Chemin de Rouge Maison.
