Title: Audio Books

I really do not understand how they work but I beleive you can download them onto an ipad?

My question is can you listen to them without earphones?

 Son has an ipad he does not use which I can have but I hate anything over/in my ears :-\

I downloaded one free from the library onto my Android tablet & yes, I could hear it without headphones.

To confirm, yes, definitely. You hear the sound coming out of the speakers of your tablet, unless you plug in the earphone or headphone socket.  If you can't hear anything, there will be an option to increase the volume, possibly using buttons on the side of the tablet or by clicking on the settings icon, which is usually a small cogwheel picture.
