Help needed - I am trying to trace my great grandparents but can't find anything! John Walsh 1856-1912 and his wife Mary 1854-1917. They were born in Ireland but moved to England some time before 1891. In England, they lived in Frizington, Cumberland and had 7 children, but only 5 survived according to the Census in 1911. On all the English census (censi?) they give their place of birth as Ireland. Their daughter, Annie Mary, born in 1894 was my grandma.
Other children in the family were John/Jack, dob 1873, also born in Ireland; Robert, dob 1877; Patrick/Patsy, dob 1881; Henry, dob 1888; Annie Mary, dob 1894, and possibly James, born 1904
John Walsh was an iron ore miner and probably a labourer. Tried tracing grandma, Annie Mary, through Cumbria Archives but they can't find any birth certificate for her, even though I do know she was born there. He may have been born in Vale of Avoca, Wicklow

You'll probably need Mary's maiden name to find the correct Walsh family in Irish records. Besides Annie Mary which other children were born in England?
-
In the indexes - there are these possibilities
Annie Mary mmn Brach
Henry mmn Roach
James mmn Roach
-
Is this the correct family in 1901? If so, son Patrick born Ireland c1881-

You can see in that written record how the surname was read as Brach in the birth I posted earlier. :)

Think it's CENSUSES but not sure! English plurals of Latin derived words are a bit of a mess.eg Crocus CROCI etc. I have an interest in Walsh, my 2xg grandmother was Ann Troy nee Walsh b c1765 Alford Lincs. Seem to have come originally from Ireland.

Still finding my way around this site, I can never remember which page to click. dathai - is that from Avoca registers? Got to try and remember schoolgirl Latin lol

Kay,
This is the index I referred to - GRO

You have to sign in but it is free. I tried Walsh and Welsh and not sure if they were one or the other or a mix. :)

I'm not convinced Anne's surname was Murphy. Initial letter might be H. :-\
-
Looks like Murphy to me - witness Jacobus Murphy (James).
-
I can't see it as anything but Murphy.
