Title: Looking for Salome?
Post by: foundryman on Thursday 13 December 18 16:28 GMT (UK)
My Maternal Great, Great Grandmother is Salome ? I am looking for her maiden name. All I have is as follows. She was born c1811 possibly in Dukes Hill, Oakengates, Salop. No BC She married John Smith [see the problem coming?] in about 1832 No MC. They had 6 children, all documented. The next and last thing I have on her is her DC which states she drowned in the Birmingham Canal at Bilston in Wolverhampton. No burial details have surfaced. Can you help please? TIA.

First of all - a warm welcome to Rootschat!

Presumably some of the children were therefore born after 1837 - so you should be able to find their birth on the gro site, and therefore the mothers maiden name?

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Have you found the family on any censuses?
In looking for Salome Smiths bn 1811 and married to a John, I can only see a John and Salome Smyth and she was born (and died) in Devon.
What are the childrens names and years of birth?
Nor can I see a death for a Salome Smith in Birmingham, bn 1811.

Can you give us some more details, dates etc please?

NB - there wont be any cert for a marriage in1832, or a birth in 1811, only a parish register entry, as Civil Registration did not commence until 1837.

Welcome from me too.

I see a death of a "Salomi" Smith in Wolverhampton in 1874 aged 69 (so birth c 1805), but that makes her older than your dates suggest.

What are the details from your Salome's death registration, please?

I saw that (in Wandsworth), but not sure it can be the same child - the one baptised in Islington on 29 Dec 1841 had a birthdate of 10 Dec 1841, so couldn't have been registered Jun qtr 1841. Also Wandsworth not local to where they appear to have been settled in North London.

The family's address on the Dec 1841 Islington baptism was Smith's Buildings.

Good thinking - that'll teach me to post without looking closely!

Unfortunately I cannot see the family, or indeed any Smiths at all, in Smith's Buildings, Islington in 1841.  (For anyone who wants to browse it, search for the unusually-named Johanna Gligg, 60, who does live there).

Going back to the Wolverhampton death, for Salomi bn 1806 ish - this might be her in 1871:

1871
Bilston Quad??  Wolverhampton
Salmarh?  Smith 66 widow bn Oakengate Shropshire (pob agrees with what was said in first post)
James 32 son married bn London
MAry Ann wife (of son presumably)
Salamrh 6 dtr
Eliza 4 dtr
James 2 son

The 6 yr old child is probably the one registered Ap/May/Jun 1865 Wolverhampton as Salomi Smith, mmn Garbett.
Parents marriage possibly AMJ 1864 Dudley.

1841 in St Luke's, Finsbury

John Smith 30
Selomey 30

All (supposedly) born in county, though that looks unreliable.

Possible birth registration for James (if he was registered at all):

James Smith, mother's maiden name Seeley, Sep qtr 1839 St Luke's vol 2 p 280.

Update: not at all sure about this - he could have been the son of James & Sarah Smith (who also had a daughter Sarah Ann, mmn Sealey, Dec qtr 1837).
